Appearance: Clear, deep mahogany brown, with a small tan head, which retains well, and scattered, fine-beaded lacing.

Aroma: Notes of coffee, roasted malt, coffee, bitter cocoa, and toasted nuts.

Taste: Opens with roasted malt and cold coffee, as the taste progresses, the roastiness intensifies, with the coffee serving as the undercurrent of the taste. Late in the taste, there are some bitter cocoa notes and some nuts. Finishes with a lingering, pleasant note of cold coffee and bitter coca. Hops seem largely absent.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and quite pleasing.

Drinkability/notes: Very nice. Even though the ABV is relatively low, this manages to seem almost over-the-top. Nicely done.

Presentation: Packaged in a sixty-four ounce brown glass Pecan Street growler, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

This pours an espresso black with a bold, roasty aroma. I get notes of dark coffee and a little worn leather. The flavor is assertive and bold, with a sharp bitterness midpoint, ending in a dry roast finish. If they brew an imperial version of this will they call it Judge, Jury and Executioner?
