Highly complex, sour and savory, the Country Boys are at their experimental ways again for their fourth anniversary by brewing an imperial red ale, souring it and then aging it on blackberries while in sherry casks. The results are as effortless in taste as it is challenging to the tastebuds.
Dark, rusty brown and tawny, the hazy beer crowns wit a voluptuous sepia froth. Both fruit and funk fall on the nose carrying with it a strong sense of fortified wine, dark fruit, berry and a stern metallic taint that reads rusty to the olfactory senses. Steely caramels, hard candy and toast roll onto the tongue as the beer's first introductions are malty and lightly seared.
Savory and sour explodes on the middle palate as its fruit centric taste strengthens. Sweetness and toasted character falls away and the fruits of red grape, cherry, currant and blackberry begin to build. Succulent, branch ripe and somewhat macerated, the fruits dry on the finish and offer a tangy sensation that bleeds into the sourness of cider, red wine and balsamic particularly effortlessly. Peppery, tannic and sour, the finish evades any initial metallic character while its late palate is of savory, oaken, madeira and sherry wines.
Medium bodied, toasty and laden with dark fruit, the beer reads like a strong flander's style red and brown ale. Its spicy and alcoholic finish is strongly vinous and with a pep of acetone before a medium long finish of sherry soaked dark berries trail into a tangy but acidic aftertaste.

Country Boy Brewing - 4th Anniversary Imperial Red Ale (Sherry Cask Aged with Blackberries). 9% ABV. 750ml bottle split between two snifters.
Look: Settles a rich, deep plum color, slight caramel hue. Has a half finger white head, which doesn't last long.
Smell: Nutty sherry, fresh blackberries, some charred oak, and some earthiness.
Feel: Medium bodied with a lot of carbonation at first. As it warm, it gets smoother.
Taste: Nutty sherry, strong presence of fresh blackberries, both tart and sweet together, black cherry, maybe raspberry, and charred oak to finish it off.
Overall: Been waiting for this to arrive since it was released, and damn was it worth the wait. The blackberries make this truly great, with the perfect of balance of sweetness and tartness, and along with the sherry and other flavors, this is almost like a fine wine. I regret only getting one bottle...

Bottle split between two New Belgium snifters. Dark amber/reddish brown pour, and settles as a dark. menacing mahogany in the glass with light only highlighting color around the edges. A thin lacing of cream-colored bubbles sits on top. Beautifully sweet, wild aroma on this beer. Evident blackberries and sweet sherry, along with notes of sourdough yeast and toasted oak. The taste follows suit, with a great balance of tart blackberries & dark fruit and sweet, oaky sherry and toasty malt. Incredibly tart on the first half, but this wildness tones down slightly as it warms on the palate, unfolding into a complex network of tartness, oak, sweetness, and malt. Great, lively carbonated finish on this beer. The feel is wonderful for what it is.

I found this to possess a truly funky and natural BlackBerry flavor. I het a bit of char, which was unexpected, chocolate, tangy sour elements and malty grain. The Sherry is apparent but a bit metallic with some oakey barrel quality.
