Black Gold Porter on tap at Country Boy.

Opaque black with large light tan head.

Feel: medium-full body with medium + carbonation. A bit too lively.

Mildly sweet up front; mildly bitter by the lightly smokey finish

Mild aroma of dark roasted malts and chocolate.

O: Good, but not outstanding. Higher ABV is well hidden.

Deepest of dark browns this Porter set up with a dense foam for a head. The nose was slightly malted with tinges of chocolate and biscuit. The flavor had a lot of purple grape sweetness with a backdrop of chocolate malt. It was very clean with a thin, watery dryness. Ultimately this is very drinkable but needs a thickness and robustness of dried fruits.

Country Boy's Black Gold Porter displays strong malt sweetness with chocolate and coffee roast at the forefront and an understated hop balance, delicious and savory for fans of dark ales that prefer restrained hop character.

But first things, first- the beer is delivered to the bar with a dark bark-brown color and a matte burnish haze. A creamy and subtle lightly tanned head settles on the beer with firm staying power and structured lace. Firm enough to be mistaked as a stout, at least to the eye.

Coffee, chocolate, nuts, and toffee frame the nose and deliver a richer tone that sides with malty attributes over those of hops. Deeply caramelized malts stop just shy of roast or heavy toast and allow a soft rebuttal of earthy hops that hardly make any aromatic impact.

Flavors take an unexpected malt heavy tone as the strong caramel and toffee flavors dominate from sip to finish. Toastier elements of bittersweet chocolate and coffee give a sweet mocha profile that carries a heartier malt character that reminds me of Whoppers candies. Slightly woody in taste as the earthy hops rise slightly at mid palate and develops to mild bitterness in finish as a welcome turn to balance the malt sweetness.

Firmly textured, the malt sweetness and overall creamy body has a tremendous impact on the beer's overall impression. Very rich and creamy throughout but the early full carbonation subsides slowly as a slight bitter dryness develops in finish. But the beer remains malt-dominant for a semi-dry finish of coffee, cocoa, and toast.

Robust from start to finish, a simpler palate and focus on malt sweetness keeps the beer focused and direct at the expense of dry drinkability and complexity. Save for me, the times when my sweet tooth gets a say.
