Poured from a growler into a pint glass. This is an American Brown ale brewed with bourbon-infused vanilla beans. The beer has a murky, dark brown color with a solid 3 fingers of head that slowly die down to some nice lacing. Lots of vanilla on the nose, as well as some rich malty notes of fresh bread and hazelnuts.

The beer has a medium body with a somewhat firm feel (appropriate for the style) and a mild, slightly sweet flavor. The vanilla definitely shows itself with the malt, making for a very nice flavor combination. I don't get much bourbon, but didn't really expect it. Despite the vanilla flavor, the beer does not taste excessively sweet. Rather, you get a nice balance between sweet malt, vanilla, and herbal hops. The finish is rather short-lived, but I suppose that's common for the style.

Overall, a very nice beer. It's a brown ale that tastes and smells like vanilla - what's not to like? The only thing holding this beer back is the style. An imperial version of this would be devastating. Still, I do like brown ales and this one respects the style while skillfully infusing flavor into it.

On tap at the brewpub in Lexington.
Small, weak and sticky off-white head over a dark red-orange-brown body.
Smells great, with penty of vanilla mixing with toasted malts. Smells very sweet; candy sweet, so its a relief it is not as sweet as suggested. Still, a bit too sweet for general consumption, but a good option as a dessert beer.

Low carbonation and near medium body; perhaps a bit under-carbonated. Smooth.

Silky brown in the glass there was a nice off white fluffy head.

The scent is lightly chocolate with some dry maltiness. Touches of bread or cracker compliment the malts but are distant.

The taste is fairly one dimensional but a very good dimension it is. Chocolate fudge brownie dominates a slightly watery finish. The chocolate fudge is pervasive and delightful and makes this an absolute must if you visit Country Boy.

12oz draft served at Louisville's newest craft beer digs - the Crescent Hill Craft House

A: Looks the part of a classic brown ale - dark mahogany with ruby highlights; interesting with little head off the tap and no retention - just a slight collar of tan colored foam; minimal lacing.

S: Lighter than anticipated on the nose; some caramel sweetness; faint hints of vanilla and the lightest of a chocolate undertone manage to break through the soft bready/nutty malt profile as the glass warms; to be honest, I didn't get a lot off of the nose of this one, but it could be a result of the plethora of fantastic smells coming from the kitchen just 15ft to the right of our seats at the bar at Crescent Hill Craft House.

T: Assertive maltiness up front in the form of warm bready flavor; vanilla appears late, breaking through with a hint of sweetness along with a light chocolate note; vanilla rises as glass warms to room temp; finish is slightly drying with a toasted bread and a nutty note tailing off while a kiss of vanilla just lingers beyond the swallow to draw you in for the next sip; not overly sweet but with a nice balance between malt and the vanilla on the finish.

M: Fine carbonation breaks through the initial oily feel on the palate; finishes with a nice, frothy crispness; interesting juxtaposition of a darker beer with a much lighter-bodied feel than its initial looks would suggest, but it works for me.

O: A solid brown ale from a great local brewery, and one that I'm glad to have had the chance to try given its limited availability. The vanilla note peaks through late to add a nice, slightly sweet twist on a classic style, making this one supremely drinkable brown ale. If you find this on tap, take advantage of the opportunity.
