Gorgeous orange to fading yellow in color there stood a thick and creamy head.

The scent is more citrus than floral with strong grapefruit, lemon, mango and melon aromas. Touches or malt and piney hops skirt the outside and provide a more structured back tone.

The taste follows the nose with nice citrus tones. Melon stands strong with hints of grapefruit and lemon. Malty breadiness creates a strong dry backbone.

There are bits of alcohol warmth that flows through the chest but avoids the palate. There is also a dryness to the palate that follows. Overall this is an DIPA that rivals some of the verg best.

My pour from a fresh growler of Knotty Pine DIPA produced a hazy light peach colored body with a tight and white, creamy head. A thin cap remained throughout and left spotty lacing inside the glass.

The smell reminded me of cut papaya and maybe honeydew. Definitely sawdust, some yeasty and hoppy spiciness. Maybe I was dreaming, but it made me think of the sugary filling in my grandmother’s chocolate covered cherries that she gave me as a kid - fruity, tart and sweet. There were some sourdough bread notes in there too. Some sort of vegetal aroma that I could not identify – celery or cucumber maybe? There were so many elements of the aroma that kept unfolding as I drank this one.

The taste reflected the aroma well. Juicy tropical fruits, sweet oranges, and melon-like hops, with a lingering bitterness. There was a fruity sweetness that stretched out into a drying citrus rind finish. The alcohol is warming and it becomes more evident as the beer warms up. With a name like Knotty Pine I expected a more resiny, pine needle type of hops presence. Those characteristics were there, but the tropical notes overshadowed the pine. The beer was so palatable, dangerously so - the 9% ABV can sneak up on you.

The body of this one was pretty rich and creamy, just like the dense silky head. Despite the medium to full bodied texture it remained easy to drink. Big flavors, a big body, and a big aroma make Knotty Pine my favorite DIPA made in Kentucky.

Maybe its the suggestion of pine that is present in the beer's name. Or maybe its the big-time Chinook additions that give this superb Imperial IPA an earthy balance to the usual citrus flavor.

Bright gold-amber in color and with the most modest of haze, the beer glows in the glass with brillian straw highlights. Well headed with a soft and creamy foam stance, the beer retains well while lacing with broken rings with each sip.

Juicy aromas of caramel dipped citrus fruits abound. Ripe red grapefruit, fresh oranges, soft mangoes, apricots, and melon give the nose a hoppy upstart. Deeper aromatics reveal sharp earthy notes of grasses, herbs, and unmistakable pine needles. But its the underpinnings of light caramel malts and a tinge of alcohol that keep the hops supported with light balance.

Similarly, the flavor of the beer starts supple and sweet with light honey and caramel, but more so seemingly from fresh citrus and tropical fruits. Its inviting taste morphs slowly and steadily into a sinking, deeply embedded bitterness of pine resins, muddled botanicals, and fresh mowed grass. Where the early palate is somewhat hop-balanced, the finish is decidedly dry and hop bittered.

Medium-full on the palate, the early creaminess is assisted by malt sweetness and carbonation. But as the beer turns to finish, the middle palate releases its carbonation and the residual sweetness is fast-fleeting- all leading to a dry, warm, and crisp finish.

Knotty Pine is an outstanding IPA that is nearly perfectly balanced as an Imperial IPA. Its certainly hop-forward in every catagory but its sneaky sweetness is well hidden by fruit and alcohol notes. It's a class act beer by the Country Boys!

When I die, bury me with this beer. I have visited over 75 Breweries in the past 2 years, and this is truly the best beer I've ever had. A wonderful brewery with great people, great atmosphere, and of course great beer. A must-see when in Kentucky. And of course, have a Knotty Pine while there

This beer is a great example of the freedom DH and the guys have at Country Boy. The special ingredients that make up this beer will not be found in any regular beers at other Lexington breweries.
