A: Being more or less a version of the brewery's Our Daily Red that has been aged for seven months in Sazerac bourbon barrels, Papaw's Red Headed Step Child pours a gorgeous near-opaque garnet with a small, clinging tan head.
S: Aromas of charred oak, woody spices, caramel, toffee, honeysuckle, dark chocolate, heavy cream, and toasted coconut are immediately present on the nose with a trace of warming, prickly alcohol underneath.
T: Sweet and alcoholic on the entry with huge notes of toasted coconut, dark bread, oak, spices, toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, brown sugar, brown butter, honeysuckle, coffee, heavy cream, and vanilla bean. The finish is peppery, prickly, and intense with notes of coconut, dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee, caramel, and oak underscored by alcohol warmth.
M: Very full bodied and very dry. Carbonation is restrained upon entry, becomes quite intense around mid-palate, and then recedes somewhat just before the fade. Alcohol is prevalent, but not overpowering.
O: This is a fantastic, complex, and challenging beer that just begs to be sipped slowly after dinner. If you like bourbon and strong ales, then this may very well be something worth investigating.
