Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of strong citrus hops, piney hops, alcohol, liquor, strong sweet malt, and slight resin. Fits the style of an American Black Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong citrus hops, piney hops, alcohol, liquor, strong sweet malt, yeast, and slight resin. Overall, good appearance, aroma, blend, and body. This is like a combination of an American Black Ale and a Belgian Strong Ale.

On draft at the brewery.
A-Very black, little brown head, minimal lacing
S-Faint sweet malt, maybe a hint of chocolate
T-Big complex bitter & sweet mix with staying power
Tart cherry, trace of woodsy oak, slight vanilla.
Lot's of bitter-sweet Baker's chocolate throughout.

M-Excellent! Very creamy with nice carbonation level for this style.
A bit of an alcohol burn at 12% alcohol.
O-Wonderful sipping beer!

Finally bottled! 750 into a New Belgium snifter. Dark brown on the pour - reminded me a bit of Coca-Cola or something similar. Absoloutely midnight black in the glass. My pour was fairly gently and produced about 1/2 a finger of bubbly, tan foam which receded down into a dense/spotty lacing after about a minute. Huge aroma on this beer - and very sweet. Definite bourbon notes encompassed by a medley of choclate, caramel, peppermint, brown sugar, and black & red licorice. Just an amazing mixture of smells that blend together so well. Oh wow. I'm not even sure where to being on describing the taste. Incredibly complex, as expected. Bourbon, chocolate, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, licroice, and even a hint of hops on the aftertaste. Maybe just my imagination. Very good, and surprisingly smooth and drinkable for being a 10+ beer. Like most of CB's other barrel-aged beers, you get all the bourbon flavor without being subject to an outstanding amount of harsh booziness.

Overall, definitely worth the wait. I'd heard this was being bottled a few months ago, and have been looking forward to it ever since. These guys continue to impress me with their barrgel-aging program. Maybe I'm biased, being local to CB, but I've yet to have anything of theirs (especially BA) that left more to be desired. Outstanding, guys.

Dark and spicy as it attacks the palate. Looks sexy in the glass. The oak really plays here even after 5 months in the bottle.

Amazing beer... Touches all of the points I would look for in a beer like this... The barrel is prevalent but not overwhelming.. The hops are prevalent but not too bitter... The time spent in the wood really have this thing singing... It's terrific... I can tell it's a black IPA but the oakey vanilla notes of the barrel cut short any dominance by the lupulus and gives this a finish that's hard to describe... Simple incredible.... I am giving it the 5 simply because, in my opinion, they have done something with the base beer that I didn't think possible.... Both personalities are shining bright without overtaking the other...
