A: Strolled in as the last stop of a BA journey. Urban Family, which is just across the street from Noble Fir, is a rather warm and inviting place. A front porch swing exncased inglass is at the doorway. Saturday evening at 6PMish and there were maybe eight people to be seen. Sordove laid back, nice and clean. Walking in, the bar is against the back and and extends along the right wall. Exposed bricks sports the numerous taphandlesThe beer menus are posted "Ours" and "Theirs". Further back you find the brewery. Nice looking place, clean and inviting.
Q: My Smoking Wood was drinking mighty fine. The house porter was safe but there were no quality issues here and no crap on tap.
S: Our server was nice, she was attentive. I am not exactly sure about her level of beer knowledge but she was savy enough to ask me if I had Smoking Wood before leading me to believe she had some knowledge as to what she was serving. The other staff at the bar was nice enough, No bad service but nothing above and beyond either.
S: Twenty + handles, all rather well chosen. Other than the Smoking Wood there was nothing that really jumped out at me and screamed "drink me now".
Not a bad spot to sit back, chat and drink. Considering the costs and somewhat mundayne selection I would be hesitant to say this a beer destination I would recommend our stray off the beaten path to get to. However, w/ Noble Fir next door it makes for a good one-two punch!

Urban Family is a fun little place to stop at during a stroll up and down Ballard Avenue. Right across the street from Noble Fir, it makes it easier to crawl (literally) from bar to bar.
Five house taps and nine guest taps are offered. Among the guest: Green Flash, Ft George, Telegraph, Boneyard, Laughing Dog... house brews all use Belgian yeast and include a Farmouse Ale, a Dubbel, a Saison and an IPA. They aren't bad but unfortunately that yeast makes them all taste pretty similar.
It is a cozy place, smells like beer and there are kegs and tanks around. More brewery taproom than public house, for sure. A convivial atmosphere, the kind of place where you strike a conversation and make friends.
Prices ain't bad, and I love the different serving options: six, eight, ten, thirteen and sixteen ounces. Well played, Urban Family. Well played.
Not a destination or an outstanding place, but fun enough to stop by when in Ballard.

A great new addition to the Ballard Ave strip - amongst all the fantastic restaurants, the beer-bar scene is now starting to shine a little brighter.
Dark room - large porch swing in the window - a few TV's often dedicated to the NBA and/or soccer - limited seating at the bar with a fair amount of table space in the moderately sized room - cool chalkboard tap list.
Great tap list - 25 taps with absolutely no filler - consistent offerings from Boneyard, Cascade, Dogfish Head, Lost Abbey, Victory, Stillwater share the board with an array of locals and belgians. From what i've seen from the taplist in the past few months, this could be the best list in the city on any given night and will consistently be in the top 5.
There is a small food menu, but clearly not a focus. There is a brewing arm of this venture which isnt up and running either. Overall, organization of the establishment seems a little strange but its a great list and the people are nice, so whatever.
