Notes/Commercial Description:
This is a northern French style of farmhouse ale traditionally made in the winter months and then laid-down in a cellar (thus the “Biere De Garde” appellation) for drinking throughout the year. Ours is a traditional amber beauty presented unfiltered with the yeast still in it to add to the slightly fruity/spicy aroma and creaminess of palate. Brewed with a blend of North American and European malt and hops, Ambre de la Chaudiere is a true reflection of our Canadian immigrant culture. Named after the famous Chaudiere Falls beside our brewery, this beer pays homage to a time gone by when honest craftsmanship and simplicity were truly valued. Sante!

A - clear copper with one finger of head that retained a thin covering
S - very Belgian in terms of banana, clove, light citrus, some toastiness and vanilla
T - very much like the nose, reminds me of a banana cream pie with a spice note, finishes with mild crisp leafy hops and grainy malt
M - light body with medium carbonation, smooth and finishing with a mix of bready fullness balanced by some dryness
O - can't recall having tried this specific style, but this is purposely flavourful, you would never pinpoint the stronger alcohol, and it is easy drinking, a pleasant surprise from the random inclusion in the Mill St. mixer

On tap at The Rhino festival, enjoyed with Chris. This was the Ottawa brewpub beer, very fresh and after attempts to control the foam, I was served up a significantly spicy biere the garde. Cloudy, with above average mouthfeel. Almost a bit too spicy, but hits the spot I just could not finish a pint.

From a 750 mL snap top bottle filled at the brewpub. Served at 7C in a Mill Street branded tulip.

Pours a hazy, rusty orange colour with amber tinges and a moderate tan coloured head that gets retained as a string-like collar and leaves some spotty lace behind.

Smells of wheat, grains, yeast, banana and bubble gum, with a subtle hint of alcohol.

Deep taste of biscuit-like grains with a toasted, earthy character. Sweet strawberry and banana accents and an assertive boozy bite.

Full-bodied with a low carbonation level. Yeast provides a pop on the tongue before a bready character takes over. Nice and dry in the finish and the aftertaste has a honey-like flavour and syrupy quality.

Great, satisfying effort and my favourite of the locally-brewed products Mill Street Brew Pub Ottawa offers. Pairs well with spicy foods, sharp cheeses and light fish dishes.

cool addition to the Spring 2012 mix pack from Mill St. This is a unfiltered beer that pours slightly hazy in the glass. The nose is much like a hefe with bubblegum and citrus but anchored with a yeasty malty base. The beer is a full mouthfeel with the hefe notes being tempered by a slightly sour farmhouse flavour. It is a nice Biere de Garde that almost demands to be sold in a bomber as a stand alone seasonal.
