Pours hazy golden color with thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are excellent. Nice piney hoppy aroma with hints of citrus. There is a slight booziness to the aroma. The taste is very smooth and what I expect from many DIPAs. Caramel based malt with a very smooth transition to a piney hop. There is a moderate bitter aftertaste that is somewhat piney as well. Very good beer. I do indeed like this. Very smooth. While you can taste the alcohol content, it is not overwhelming.

A great Imperial IPA from Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company in Houston, TX. One of my favorites. If you like IPA's, you will enjoy this one. Only available on draft at this time, so I fill up my growler when I can find it. I have a fever and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!!

16 oz. can poured into tulip

L: orange/peach ... light passes through but it's murky/opaque -- still, a very "clean" murk, no debris or wispy clouds in it; clearing up a bit on the bottom; gave it a hard pour, so the head was huge, too big, over 2 inches, BUT the way it bubbled and boiled, I bet a soft pour of this one would give you a nice thick head ... pretty sticky and lacing

S: hops and hops, but with a ton of sweetness; floral ... sweet flowers, some grassiness, hint of grain ... nice; as it warms you drink it, gets some caramel in there

T: bitter ... big big hop bite ... 118.36 IBUs means who knows? BUT this sucker is loaded with a ton of hops, and the website says lots of Noble hops, so it's not typical American DIPA citrusy or caramely -- more like massive bitter grass and flowers; as it warms, caramel shows through (probably my palette adjusting to the bitter); grain taste that might be some real light malt, which is offering a little balance to that bitterness

F: easy drinking and almost light for so much alcohol and taste ... good carbonation despite the big pour

O: strong contender for finding its way back into my fridge -- and i'm not a huge DIPA fan. it's super bitter but has a great grain/sweet grassy taste that is a good reward for chewing through the hop bite. love the idea of making a big pale ale with Noble hops, just for something a bit different.

bravo for Buffalo Bayou ... they keep moving up my favorite Texas brewery leaderboard

Time to update this review!

I picked up a can from Spec's in Houston on Westheimer near Voss about 24 hours after canning so you know this stuff is fresh. I figured it is time to give it a fresh review since it has been almost a year since I last had it. Keep in mind I have not had this since the original review below.

I am drinking this directly from the can while sitting at my desk writing this.

A - It's in a can. I cannot see much other than some hazy straw colored action.

S - Much improved! Smells like a fresh DIPA! Floral nose along with some grassiness.

T - Again, much improved over my first experience. Great hop flavor that follows the nose. This is right out of the fridge and at first I noticed some unpleasant bitterness on the finish but this cleared up as the beer warmed up.

M - Good, medium body.

O - I picked this up wanting to give it (and Buff Brew for that matter) another shot. I am glad I did. The price point is just right and this is very drinkable straight from the can.

Original score was 2.8

Was excited to pick this one up at Growlers Montrose. Brought it home and chilled it overnight in the fridge. Poured in to a tulip glass with little fanfare from the carbonation, barely a thin head was produced. The initial aroma is citrus and reminds me of a barleywine. The first taste backs it up. This tastes unfinished and more like a barelywine than a DIPA. If you have ever had an old Rodeo Clown you would have a good idea of what this resembles.

Very disappointed in this one.
