A: Pours a nearly black, deep deep brown, with a one finger off-white head. It really looks similar to a BSDA.
S: Pretty huge citrus orange and grapefruit hop character. I get a little bit of a roasty caramel kind of smell right at the end
T: It has that same big hop character the nose would suggest. Really a lot of bitter grapefruit skin. I'm getting a little bit of a bitter chocolate note and some sugary sweetness at the end
M: Medium body with real sharp carbonation.
Overall I liked this one a lot. Easily one of the best black IPAs I've tried

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. The local beer store has had bottles of this oddity for a while now, so I figured it was time to give it a shot. My first encounter with this brewery. Minimal label with some fabric glued around the bottleneck. "California Black India Pale Ale". "California Grown". My bottle lists a 7.60% abv instead of the 7.30% abv listed on BeerAdvocate.
Poured into a clear balloon snifter.
A - Pours a giant five to one head to beer ratio. Beer is a very dark woodsy brown color, nearly black. Khaki head is big fat and fluffy, leaving lots of big sticky lacing in it's wake. Almost root beer float like in appearance. Head retention is ridiculous. Some dark flecks of sediment noticeable in the froth.
S - My bottle has clearly gone downhill from what it once was. All that is really noticeable is a strong bretty yeast character. Subtle notes of cream and faded citrus fruits in the background.
T - Ah yes, the earthy yeast have taken over. Dried, herbal hops, mild pine / grapefruit bitterness, subtle chocolate malt still vaguely noticeable. Sadly nothing that I would describe as "caramel" is noticeable. Some burnt dark barley roast is noticeable on the end. Musty green apple from the yeast. It's not what it once was, but it ain't bad.
M - Feel is crisp and clean. Good malt body with some lingering stickiness, and some hints of roast on the palate. Mildly resinous hop presence remains, also. Good drinkability for the abv. Medium-full bodied with hefty carbonation.
Overall, an enjoyable offering from this unknown to me brewery, but I would love to have another chance to try this beer fresh. I will be on the lookout for more from Ruhstaller.

From 22oz bottle
Great dark color and light head.
Smell light but notable hops
taste more malt than hops, very smooth/rich, very little alcohol burn
feel is smooth, not syrupy
overall very enjoyable if expecting something dark; has characteristics of dark beer with some IPA flavoring. If expecting something very hoppy in the vein of many west coast IPAs then will be underwhelmed.

I wrote a pretty awful review of this beer due to a bad can I purchased. The owner found me out and sent me a new one (along with some other good stuff), so this is a re-review. Thanks, JE! You guys are awesome!
A: Pours a slightly thin, but solid-looking deep brown color. Dead black in the center with hazelnut edges and a nice and creamy 1 finger mocha colored head.
S: Earthy hops along with an almost buttery molasses and chocolate note. Slight hints of pine, citrus rind and toasted bread.
T: Definitely miles better than the first can. Light pine upfront with some smooth bready malt. Hints of toast, molasses, light cocoa and some roast before a slightly herbal hop finish. Wish the mouthfeel was a bit lighter, but this is a solid Black IPA.
