First had poured from 12-oz. can, indicating 7.60 ABV, gift from brother, into tulip. My first beer from Ruhstaller, I can't recall ever having anything quite like this. "Black IPA" is still a nonsensical name, but this is an excellent beer.

Ruhstaller's Capt., black IPA. 7.6% ABV. 55 IBUs.
A: Over two fingers of slightly tan head. Black in the glass; honey brown in the dimple. Tons of dots of lacing left behind. The lacing seems generally very sticky. Sheeting seems faint, but it's hard to tell.
S: Generous piney hop aroma, but with a backing of coffee.
T/MF: Leafy/herbaceous hops on a dark chocolate foundation. More of a hop fans black IPA. Notes of licorice and char on the back end. Not bad, but not what I would go for.
Poured from a 12 oz. can, into a Belgian tulip glass.

The beer is pitch black with a clumpy tan head. The nose first is a nice piney hop scent with some hints of citrus. It is then a layer of nutty and/or chocolaty malts. Smooth, medium bodied beer with a nice tingle of carbonation. The beer begins with a crisp dried hop flavor, that quickly fades into a toasty malt flavoring and ends with a coffee like bitterness.

Another “seen it and passed it by many times” beer. So of course….the wife comes home with it. Not sure about the black thingy clinging to the neck. Maybe it was cold. Dunno.
Sactown brew with local growers hops and barley. I like that.
Pours a black/dark, dark brown color with a nice mocha colored creamy head. Looks great and very inviting. Good lacing throughout.
The aroma is leafy with some grass and nice light roastiness. Some leather as well.
The taste is slightly on the roasted side with a nice baker’s chocolate kick on the end. Light bitterness to remind one that this is still an IPA, but nothing harsh and rounds out the beer well. Just the right amount of roast here….and I’m not taking about meat. A bit of spiciness as well.
Overall this was my mistake that I passed by hundreds of times. I’ve had the Black IPA but this one was actually quite refreshing and enjoyable. Not palate wrecking and a bomber was easy to consume. Very enjoyable and I look forward to more things from the Ruhstaller crew.

Black IPA without the strong hop bitters. Light bodied but great cocoa and coffee malts.

A gift from Jaimie; thanks man! Appearance is a colossal frothy, light, billowy tan head with lots of clingy lace and an opaque black brown color. Aroma is hop, light malt, and grain with a hint of roast. Flavor's at first a touch soft with bitter coming on stronger and stronger. Not a lot of roast and mild malt flavor. Fairly dry. Body is good. Kind of an odd duck in that they've muted the hop & dark malt flavors.
