My gateway to the world of sour beers, and a beer I love to revisit.

Tangy, deep, smooth and deep. Deep aroma of wood sugars, mild vinegar, candy and spice; the aroma flows into the nose as strong as the breeze from a sweet ocean. As happy as the nose is, the tongue is happier: it has as fascinating an interplay of flavors as any beer I have ever tasted: sweet as the strongest barleywine, with a thrumbing sour of green apple twirling around it.

This is the ONLY beer I have ever encountered that I wanted to smell more than I wanted to taste, and it tastes very, very good. Bravo.

Its great to have a chance to try world classics like this you really need to savor beer like this,pours a great brown color with very nice red tints showing thru everywhere in the glass not as much head as expected but the color was awesome.A very complex aroma consisting of some mustiness when first opening andsour cheery with a nice spicey element allspice maybe?Taste is oaky and sour but not nearly as sour as I thought it would be wich is a good thing for me I pick up a light spice not as well with a vinegar and light salty note in the finish.Wow a great extremely complex beer one to savor for sure.

Pours a dark brown....some tartness in the nose, mild fruit....the taste is absolutely fantastic: semi-tart, not quite sour, an almost cherry like finish and with only the most subtle woody notes....a somewhat lively mouthfeel but yet this beers quickly turns with an ever growing creaminess towards the finish, light in some way....what a great, fresh mouthfeel...this beer is balanced quite nicely and has a nice complexity about it....easily a beer to sit down and slowly enjoy several of....to me this was a world class old brown ale...top marks here

Appearance – The body is a beautiful, shiny brown with shades of orange and full of sediment. As interesting as the liquid is, the head is equally as boring. It came up very little and went down quickly. I didn’t get the impression by popping the cork that this ale was flat or bad. It just doesn’t seem to have a lot of head.

Smell – The malty sourness has a lambic way about it. This is no cheap sourness like many examples of the style. This is like sour green apples dunked in cider.

Taste – This will suck in your cheeks. Some cheap Flanders hurt my teeth, but this is the good stuff. The dextrose-flavored finish is a bit worn down by the big green apple sourness, but it’s there enough to be noticed. Again, I like the lambic characteristics that I’m finding here.

Mouthfeel – If you’re looking for that “just sucked a lemon” feeling then this will do the trick. It goes about it pleasantly, though. There’s nothing harsh in this one.

Drinkability – This is an easy drinker. It has all the facets of a good Sour Ale but is not too harsh or over-the-top. There’s also a very mature, almost oaky nature to this one that seems to put it above most of the pretenders. I found this to be a very solid, drinkable ale.

Comments – This is a 2001 so has been sitting for three years and is no worse the wear.

Now I get it…now I finally get this style. This is magnificent.

Served on tap and in the proper glassware at the Map Room in Chicago, IL, this chestnut bodied brew pours with an audible carbonation and inch thick slightly speckled white head.

The nose is intensely sour and almost lambiclike. It’s so sour in fact, that’s it is difficult to make anything of the aroma. With some consentration I think I smell some cherry lemonade ice tea.

I can’t really taste much in here accept for sour acid and a little cider. This doesn’t bother me in the slightest. The acid flavor is to die for.

The motuhfeel is like there’s a ballet on my tongue.

Despite the acid I could never grow tired of drinking this. I don’t know how they do it.

A: Dark reddish brown with a big pale beige head that settles slowly and leaves a nicely looking lid of foam.

S: Distinct aromas of overripe fruit (apples), some sweet candy-like aromas, raisins, light phenols, a faint note of funky barn, wood and tart vinegar. A pleasant smell full of character.

T: A fantastic taste, just really really good. A great blend of sweetness and tartness develops in the mouth with the sweetness taking just the slightest of leads. Notes of cherries, apples, plums and some raisins. A faint note of sweet candy. Some vinegar, wet wood and a note of daring yet subtle yeast. The finish is gently bitter with a rich tartness mixed with some phenols, minerals and raisins. This is just a very tasty brew.

M: Medium body, well balanced carbonation. Slightly chewy and sticky in the mouth with a somewhat dry finish.

D: I really like Goudenband, nothing but a classic. It's just unbelievably tasty. Very easy to drink as well and I can easily drink a 750 ml bottle of this stuff by myself.

Liefmans Goudenband Provision Ale 8% alcohol. Poured from 750ml corked and caged bottle into an Ommegang Snifter.

A- Glorious sight of a near opaque dark brown fluid with a quarter inch off white head that leaves behind a tight bubbly froth that lightly holds on the the edges of the glass slipping back to the brew after the swirl and/or sip of the excellent Flanders Oud Bruin.

S- Fresh scents of cherries, candied apples, and sweet malts upfront on the nose. A light hint of musky yeast is noted with a slightly spiced edge.

T-M- Where do I start? A sweet almost tart bite of cherries and currants stings the tongue with bountiful flavor. Second notes of sweet apples and pears followed by light brown sugar.
Mouthfeel is a heavily carbonated tingle with very little alcohol ester presence. Mildly dry with excellent drinkablity.

O- Overall one of the best if not the best Flanders Oud Bruin style beer i've ever had hands down. I'm going to stock up on this one Cheers!

75cl bottle poured into two oversized wine glasses, 2006 vintage so says the cork.

It pours a cloudy chestnut color with a huge amount of yeast clumpies in all the pours. This beer was opened after only about two hours in the fridge after a long bumpy car ride so I will excuse the vast amount of suspended yeast in the pour. If it poured like this after several days in the fridge I would normally dock it points because the amount of yeast was really excessive. There is only a short lived cream colored head.

The nose is pretty muted and restrained for a sour brown and for my liking. There is also a lot of sugary sweetness which I am not the biggest fan of. Underneath that sweetness is a reassuring tartness with just enough acetic in the nose without being overpowering.

The taste has a lot of oaky and caramel malt favors married in a medium level of tartness. The taste finishes just too sweet for my taste and is just distracting. I understand this style should have a little more residual sweetness than Flanders reds but the amount found in the beer is over the top and distracting the from the real character of the beer. I guess the trade-off of this attribute is the approachability of this beer.

Mouthfeel was just right with a low/medium level of carbonation and a full bodiedness. Drinkability was good as well and a very refreshing beer, my only wish is less sweetness and let the sourness and woodiness of the beer shine through.

750ml- Wrapper sure makes it seem special
A- Dark burgundy, little bubbles. For mine, little to no head, just a little something around the walls of the glass
S- You can smell it as you pour it. Wow it smells good! Date, caramelized sugar, berry/pear compote with a sour sting
T- Delicious You don't want it to end. Sour berries that pucker you up nicely. Such a perfect balance of sweet/sour/ and some extraordinary thing I couldn't put my finger on
M- Soooo smooth Mine was lightly carbonated, but I wouldn't have changed a thing

This is one damn good beer. If you were to introduce someone to sour ales this might be the perfect beer to do it with. I just want more and more of it, that is the only problem

Pours from the 750ml bottle a deep brown with hints of red as well. A light, airy bubbly head forms on top and leaves some nice delicate lacing on the side of the glass as well. Aromas are a mix of sweet caramel maltiness and some sour fruity characteristics (cherry, plum.) There a nice spiciness present as well along with woody notes. Quite nice.

First sip brings a yeasty caramel maltiness upfront along with an equalizing fruity sourness that makes for an interesting interplay between the two flavors on the palate. There's some nice woody, vinous tones on the way down along with a gentle spiciness. Toffee, molasses and even a slight hint of cinammon. Quite a tasty treat here.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a medium body and quite a bit of carbonation. This is a unique and tasty brew that I have no problem consuming. I very much enjoy the sweet/sour aspect of it and I look forward to having it again in the future.

Caged and corked 750. Cork came out with a loud pop as soon as the cage was undone.

Pours what appears to be a solid brown body until held up to the light and the deep crimson red really shines through. Small quarter inch of tan head disappeared quickly to a couple of collections of small bubbles.

Smell is sweet and sour fruits of cherries and plums and grapes with some hints of apple. A solid sweettart candy smell. Quite delectible, but this is a favorite style of mine.

A good sweet and sour flavor profile. Not over the top sour like some of the others of the style. I like them as sour as they come, but this is a good alternative and a more drinkable beer for those who don't care for sour as much. Flavor has the typical belgian profile of dark fruits. Very similar to the smell with the sweet cherries and plums which come across like many red wines do. The addition is a dry sour aspect with tart cherries and plums again. A caramel sweet maltiness balances this out well.

A good bit of carbonation in the mouthfeel adds a crisp feeling to this. Mouthfeel is still decently full even with the carbonation levels. Drinkability is good for the style due to the nice sweet and sour combo without being over-the-top tart.

Corked and caged bottle dated 2017- I couldn't wait that long.

I've tried this beer a couple of times because I like it so much, but I'll catalogue my response this time.

I'm drinking it out of a celebrator glass because it's like a wide, stout flute or short pilsner glass.

Appearance is coke-bottle brown, maybe a little lighter. Reddish tints throughout. Lacing is really great- forming a crown sticking to the glass.

Smell is sticky, a little sweet, with tart notes and brown sugar coming through.

Taste is initially soft (including mouthfeel) rounding out to tart raspberry, rhubarb, and sweet tart candy. Mouthfeel follows with extra but not overwhelming carbonation. Superb thirst quencher. Finishes with the slightest iodine, but in a good way.

An amazing brew, one of the best, I hope the Liefmans facility stays afloat.

Presentation: 255ml green champagne-style bottle with a crowned wire cork. Cork suggests a 1998 bottling. Sample poured into a proper Liefmans gold rimmed glass.

Appearance: A hazy dark red beer, with rich amber hues and a clumpy, bubbly off-white head.

Smell: Medicinal, crisp nose with a bold yeast spice aroma, touch of caramel malt and metallic notes -- "sweet n sour"-like.

Taste: Tart upfront, a bitter cherry and lime flavour. An oak flavour mingles nicely. Definite medicinal and metallic notes through the entire beer, but very palatable and expected. Malt is hidden under the tartness, however it's sweet with faint caramel flavours. Things dry up to an almost pucker quality at the end and it's followed by a metallic aftertaste.

Notes: An exceptional Flemish oud bruin brew -- the classic example. Massively complex and unique.

37.5cl bottle wrapped in paper.

Ruby color, minimal lacing,

Tart, lemon peel, wood tannin, hint of alcohol, white chocolate, taffy in the nose.

Smack of tartness, dryness, grain, dried grass, hint of honey, dry clean finish.

A really interesting brew, extremely drinkable yet intensely complex. Age on this beer does wonders but fresher versions are a treat as well.

Muddy brown with chunks of yeast sediment. No head. The lactic or brett over powers almost everything. You can get som chocolate and dark fruit in the nose. Sweet and sour, like one of those Charms lollipops, but heavier on the sour. Quite full bodied, but the sour finishees puckering. I guess that’s the way its supposed to be.

Attractive paper wrapping around corked and caged bottle. The cork easily twists off, without a pop, revealing a 1998 stamping. Served slightly chilled into a goblet, no head even with an aggressive, initial pour. The body is a murky, purple brown(dark brown with lavender hues, perhaps), with suspended yeast particles("floaties") apparent. The yeast particles eventually settle to the bottom of the goblet.
Aroma begins with pronounced, woody notes of oak, followed immediately by tart, Bing cherries. Musty yeast and apple skins contribute to the complex, and inviting bouquet.
Mouthfeel has a medium body, but no carbonation. Slightly sherry like in the mouth.
The taste begins tart and tangy, with cherry fruitiness. Yeast mustiness is very prominent. Not as vinous as expected. Oxidation is apparent, and this one seems a bit past its prime. The abv is very well hidden, but will sneak up on you in a hurry.
Flanders Red Ales are one of my favorite styles, and I can't wait to try a more recent vintage of this one. Very complex, and tasty, even at this stage.

12.7 ounce bottle, wrapped in paper and caged and corked, 2003 stamped on the cork, mild carbonation, jammy dark, reddish brown, cloudy/murky, nose is slightly sour, woody, musty. Complex, heady brew, sourness is suprisingly muted, but still present. Sweet/sour balance is exceptional. (I understand h/e that this is not what alot of folks are looking for in a beer)

750ml bottle poured into a sampling glass.

Pours a clear brown with a small white head. Nose is fairly tart and malty.

Taste us quite well balanced for an oude bruin, it's tart and sour but it's not like vinegar which makes it quite drinkable. That being said it's somewhat bland for the style, it like it's afraid to commit.

L: Deep chestnut color to mahogany would be clear if it were not so dense. Sports a 1” sudsy cream to ttan colored head.
S: Lemony tartness, traces of wet horse blanket, fruit, and caramel malt.
T: Cherry malt with a little wine character, meaty yeast, and a moderate tartness moderated by the malt flavors.
F: Very soft in the mouth with a medium body and carbonation.
O: A very refreshing sipping beer that has a nice balance between its various components.

750ml green bottle, cork and caged, wrapped in paper. best before 09-2020 on the cage, 2010 on the cork. poured into a snifter.

pours out a very dark red color, very nice reddish hues in the light, light tannish head was quick to fade but left a thick, creamy ring and is easily revived with a quick swirl. lots of carbonation visible. a little lace. the second pour yielded a much better head.

not much aroma at first, maybe too cold? some nice tart, lactic funk, a little vinegar, dark fruits, figs, a rich, slightly sugary dark malt. cherries come in the more it warms and maybe just a hint of woody oak.

i enjoy the taste a bit more than the aroma. lots of sour, tart cherries that mingle so nicely with a dark fruity, rich maltiness. hints of vinegar, funk and wood. crisp tart apple in the finish, as well as dry and tart.

very dry and fairly sour. rich heavier side of medium body. a very high carbonation.

definatly one of the better flanders style ales out there, worth a try. seems to have everything in perfect balance, with a subdued vinegar character. way better than duchesse in my opinion.

A 375ml champagne bottle with a BB of June 2020! Longest date I've seen yet. Picked up from my local beer specialist a while back and stored in the fridge. Comes wrapped in lovely blue paper.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A dark ruby-brown hue with plentiful carbonation and chunks of yeast floating around. Darker than I expected it to be. Produces a large off-white head with a fine texture and decent retention; this eventually subsides to a good surface layer. The aroma is deliciously sour - simultaneously vinegary and sweet. The original components of the beer are long gone, but there are plenty of yeasty, fruity notes - especially cherries. A spicy, warming hint of alcohol lurks in the background.

Tastes of tart, fruity goodness. The flavour is difficult to describe, with notes of vinegar, yeast, acidic fruit, cherries and alcohol. Musty - in a good way - the taste of nostalgia. Mouthfeel is prickly and puckering; quite thin but well carbonated. Leaves the palate dry, with a fruity aftertaste of sweet 'n sour yeast.

Fantastic - tart and morish. I wish I had another one. Lacks any of the typical characteristics of most beers, yet complex and delicious. The time taken to produce this gives it a depth most beers just don't have. What more can I say? Add this to your must-try list now....

Liefmans Goudenband is a pretty good oud bruin and I wonder if my scores might not reflect my lack of experience with the style versus my expectations of what an oud bruin should be. I expected this beer to be more assertively tart, less sweet and with more wild character. However, I found Goudenband darker and more syrupy than I thought it would be. The oak flavor doesn't come out very much. For me this was a bit too malty and caramel-ly for me without the acidity I was expecting.

Had this for the first time at the Goat the other night. I really like that they let you leave the bar with your empty high end bottles for shootin/plinkin.

Comes in a paper wrapped bottle, looks high end, but you kind of get this humorous image of foreign dudes drinking out of paper bags but dressing it up like malt liquor in front of the neighborhood convenience store like they do it on the east/west/north/south side.

Pours a faint red. Its always difficult for me to be confident of that when drinking something for the first time there, because the color scheme going on makes my eyes have a hard time looking at stuff color wise.

Lots more caramel than I can recall drinking in any beer really, much less for style, I was intrigued and a little hesitant at that point for the sheer 'wait a minute' feel of things.

Weird tartness to its initial presentation, I'm telling you, this one was all over in an unknown kind of for the first time way, the acidic almost citrus yet heavy feel had me thinking of aspects of red and white wine and would come full circle with a nice metallic tinge to it. Later sweetness envelopes. This was a complex, but not showy or for the sake of doing weird shit kind of stuff some brewers will do.

Not a bad selection for the night, and a good price on this relative to style.

12.7 oz bottle into a Westmalle chalice. Cork reads "2006."

A murky brown pour yields no head whatsoever. Nothing. Nada. Well, maybe a razor thin ring around the outside. Tons of yeast in the bottle, I leave about an inch of beer so I don't end up with the yeast in my glass.

Nose is pretty nice. Sweet dark fruits dominate. Raisins & figs.

Has a light rum taste coupled with a moderate sweetness. Very very slight tart bite on the backend.

This beer is flat. No carbonation at all. Other reviews say it should be medium bodied. Well, mine isn't. The flatness is a sore thumb on what might otherwise be a good beer.

If the beer had a decent mouthfeel, I think it would be refreshing and more complex. As it stands, it isn't.

2001 bottling...wow, almost as dark as a stout -- dark hazy brown, decent head that laces beautifully. If you don't like yeasties, decant this sucker -- the particles are stuck in a tighter suspended animation than Walt Disney. Deep raisin aroma, even a little gasoline. I forgot how astringent Flanders Reds were supposed to be, but there's a cool sense of fresh peaches and tart apples along with acidic grape. Malt turns a little prune-like mid mouth and the beer finishes with a dry pucker and a little cayenne. A little too sour for my everyday tastes (but there is a nice complexity), but there's a good variety of flavors in here, and it gets better as it warms. Unique...

Ain't beer great?
