1992 Vintage caged and corked 375ml bottle received from a generous BA thanks!

Appearance: Pours a transparent garnet to russet brown with illuminated folds. Crown is fairly non-existent as is lacing.

Smell: Potting soil and oxidation.

Taste: A very nicely muted sweetness from the malt mixes with a sophisticated softened acidity. Unfortunately the potting soil and oxidized wet paper quality carries over from the nose into the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Thick side of thin bodied with low carbonation.

Overall: A fallen warrior. Probably due more to handling / conditioning than anything else. This bottle did not age well at all and my score is far from indicative of what I'd give regulaor goudenband. Makes me wonder if vintage bottles should ever be the basis for a beer review actually...

Pours a dark brown with a small white head. Scent is sweet cherry and vanilla. Hints of wood and chocolate. Slight acidic and funky aroma. Taste is initially sweet cherry with some chocolate and very little anise. A bit of alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with an acidic finish. Drinkability is very high and refreshing. Overall, this is my favorite offering from this brewery.

750ml bottle, courtesy of Von Schplieffen.

A: Creamy light brown head atop a medium-brown body. Quite nice.

S: Sweet, tart, and fruity. Figs, cherries, vanilla, and light red-wine vinegar. Quite good.

T: Follows the nose, with a nice mix of tartness and sweetness. Plenty of vanilla, cherry, fig, and grape. Dry, tart bitterness on the finish. Tasty.

M: Frothy, creamy, and a bit thin. Not bad though.

O: This was quite enjoyable, but honestly I was expecting more. It was a bit heavy on sweetness and yet thin on body. Good, not great.

Cheers!

A: Rather deep brown, and topped with a sparse head that is lively during pour, but dissipates quickly.

S + T: A nice maltiness with an excellent balance of tartness. Modest fruitiness adds a subtle character. There's a little bit of a tinny note to it, but it is a positive experience. Delicate, balanced, and complex.

M + D: This is quite a fabulous old brown. It's subtlety is one of its best characteristics. The alcohol content is almost impossible to determine from drinking it alone. That... comes after a few quaffs!

Brouwerij Liefmans Goudenband is an excellent example of a Flanders Ode Bruin. Goudenband uses several pale and dark malts and is lagered for a year before being blended with a younger beer to restart fermentation. The brew pours hazy russet brown color and features a thin eggshell colored head and spotty lace. Hints of tart and sourness give way to dark fruits like sour cherries, raisins, and dates, subtle yet wonderful. Bready malt flavors quickly fade into a delectable tartness that features underlying cherry and plum notes and sweetness before another hit of sour and a dry finish. A higher level of carbonation is met well in this medium-bodied brew. We were lucky enough to enjoy this on draft but would be happy enough to cellar a few bottles to enjoy the changes.

Beer is dark brown, almost no head.

Beer has a fruity scent, consisting of grape, plum and current. Vinous. Some balsamic vinegar.

Taste has balsamic vinegar, mildly tart. Some dark fruit (plum), as well as the red grape flavour from the nose.

Light/medium bodied, low carbonation. Feels good.

Overall, good beer but not remarkable.

Poured into a globe.

A. Deep brown with some red highlights, and a tight, creamy head that never completely goes away.

S. Tart apples, some spicy phenols, a good hit of musty funk, and a little caramel unless I'm mistaken.

T. Really well balanced between the sweet and the sour. Everything in the aroma comes through in the flavour, with a little vinegar on top, and some almost chocolatey hints as it warms up. Yeah, definitely some chocolate.

M Smooth, medium-bodied.

O. There was a kids cough medicine when I was a nipper called Owbridge's. My parents had to hide the bottle because I loved it so much. While Goudenband doesn't actually taste like Owbridge's it stirs a memory with the combination of flavours in the beer, especially the phenols. I could drink this until the cows come home.
