The potential this place has is amazing. Perfect location downtown historic area. Upscale pizza and dining. Not your typical dive pizza pub. The restrant shows very nice and is very trendy and one of the greenest resturants in Jacksonville. Owners are passionate about food and craft beer. I think they have 50 on tap with loads of bottles too. keep in mind this place is slammed at peak hours for a reason. Love this place and will continue to come. Especially if they rotate their taps as much as they say they are. Another great beer bar in jacksonville!!!

Pele's Wood Fire is a darkly shaded corner restaurant in the Riverside section of Jacksonville, which resembles Georgetown of Washington, DC and downtown Durham, NC. It's noted specialty is pizza made to order and in different sizes. It also has a fuller menu and the venue is filled with booths as well as an angled bar.
Walking in through the front door, I immediately felt welcome and at home as the darkness of the venue from the outside didn't tell me that this restaurant was had a certain big city feel to it. Since I was from the greater NYC, I appreciated it and moved on the bar.
Sitting at the tall bar by myself in front of the double row of taps, I thought looking at the wall mounted selections that something was missing or out of place. No signs or a chalk board in front of the taps to tell patrons what they had. Then I saw the short bartender trying to barely reach the taps. While it was mildly entertaining to see this constant struggle, I was surprised management had not fixed this. Maybe they were also entertained to see her struggle with the taps...
Everything about the bar and the restaurant was contained in the well constructed menu, complete with details of the beers on tap and bottle list. There was also an abundant wine selection, which surprised me, though wine has a much more prominent role here in Florida.
The beer selection was vibrant with its bottles and taps. With 40 taps grouped by style, it was clear the designer of the selection knew what they were looking at with diversity in mind. While I was hoping to taste more of the locally brewed beers, there were other great beers like Bell's Oberon, Ommegang's Three Philosophers, St. Bernardus 12, Dogfish 90 Min, and Hoegaarden to be sampled or relied upon to fill an evening.
Starting with Bell's Oberon, I ordered a personal pizza with meat on it that was exceptional in its execution and tasty thin crust. Next was the locally brewed Intuition Kings Stout, which was served too cold, but in right glassware for sitting 5 minutes while I killed the pizza. Glowing with smokey grains and coffee, it was a perfect after-pizza beer with substantial 12% strength.
Reflecting in the moment of the bar, I noted tasters hanging from the wall. One could buy a row of four 4oz tasters of any tap beers (made note for future...). Then the real surprise arrived....
The bill was too low. I looked at it three times and then asked the bartender if they missed something. She informed me they had a late night "Happy Hour" and it was $2 off pints.
I was impressed. If I had been in NYC, that mighty stout would have been $7-10. It was $3 during the special and $5 on a regular basis.
Looking back, I will be returning to Pele's Wood Fire in future for more pizza and beer.
