Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Great name and did a double take seeing it was a saison. Medium brown colured bottle that yields a lot of lace. Spicy, but yeasty above all. Other than pepper and some understated spices, not exception for the style. Slightly above average mothfeel.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

Thanks to Chris F. for sharing this one.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, fruit, caramel, and yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty but quite strong in terms of how the alcohol comes across.

thanks to tenderbranson69 for sharing this at the dusty sheep, enjoyed chilled in a tulip.

The color is ruddy brown with moderate haze and practically no head. The smell is full of malt with slight floral accent with light yeast aroma with some spice and mild nuts with a gentle alcohol nose. The feel is great moderately light body for the strength with mild carbonation and mostly sweet body with gentle spice texture and pretty low bitterness with practically no alcohol just a skosh in the finish.

The taste is good with a very full malt presence, mild sweet nutty and toffee-like flavor with a sweet caramel syrup element with yeast adding a phenolic accent with some floral elements and dry spice near the finish with mild alcohol flavor. This is a unique beer in the belgian dark strong category, I was pleased to try it and would certainly enjoy having it again.

First had: on tap at the brewpub

The name presumably a nod to Westvleteren, they labeled this beer a "dark strong saison," but it had characteristics somewhat leaning towards a quad or barleywine. I was able to sample this a few weeks before its release in uncarbonated form, but obviously this review applies to the finished product.

Chestnut brown color, hazy, with a moderate beige head that displayed decent retention and little to no lacing. Aroma of dark dried fruits, brown sugar, vanilla, earth. This packs a punch, and the alcohol heat hits you right away, though it's more felt than tasted. Raisin and fig sweetness on the palate, brown sugar, fruitcake cherries, maple, obvious Belgian yeast, a bit of tannin astringency that mellows out some as the beer warms...it's probably best to let this one sit a few minutes before drinking. Bottle aging will make this quite interesting. Body is medium-full, mouthfeel is pretty slick and warming. I'm not completely sold on this one yet, but it's still a good brew and, again, should improve more as it ages.

Draft offering at the source. Notes from a review taking a few weeks ago. The brew appears a hazy mahogany with some amber to orange or maybe yellowish green noted around the edges. A swirl revives a finger of tan froth to the surface and produces a spotty lace sticking to the glass.

The smell is primarily belgian candy sugar. Hints of fruity citrus and floral alcohol notes that are almost tart like with yeasty spice mildly evident. There is a hint of something like orange or lemon zest with dark raisony sugars emerging more toward the back. As far as the aroma goes, they pretty much nailed that sticky sweet quad-like aroma.

The taste is strong reminescent of belgian candy sugar with a mildly tart accent before a big solvent alcohol kick. Some hints of vanilla, burnt sugar, molasses and a bit of an overall medicinal feel from the alcohol impact. Raisins and herbal rindy hops like orange citrus zest or pulp bring up the back.

This is a full bodied offering with a light level of carbonation. A huge alcohol impact is almost numbing on the tongue once you get acclimated with the sticky residual sugary quality of this brew. It is unique and worth a try but not something I would want to consume more than 8-10 oz of in a sitting.

Review from notes.

A - Pours copper orange with a small half finger head leaving small trails of lace.

S - Sweet nose with some raisins, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla and dulled fruit rind.

T - Taste is similar to the nose in that the sweetness and saison body are the strongest flavors. A bit of fruit comes out as it warms up. Sweet, dry finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, sweet feel with a bit of booze coming thru as it warms up.

O - Tastes just like a quad with a saison core helping to bring it all together. A very interesting beer. The booze is a little stronger than I would like but it is still a solid beer.

On Tap at The Brew Cafe in Ardmore

Westy13 is a dark saison that took a bit of time to produce. The color is a dirty red color with some brown spottings throughout. A nice amount of tan bubbles forming a creamy head on top, nice for a 13% beer. Good retention with notches on the way down.

Smell is not your average saison, in fact, 13 does not remind me of a saison at all. This has a more caramel forward scent with toffee and some berry scents popping up. I get big hits of grape and slight wine characteristics. The 13% does not come out except for at room temp. Also ,some vanilla scent towards the bottom. Wonderful.

Westy13 is something different, saison with a strong ale twist. Big notes of caramel/toffee, yet not cloying or too sweet. Towards the middle grape skins leading into a winey middle. A nice burst of some cherry and other berries and vanilla towards the end. The last 2oz's were at room temp and everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

The body is at a strong medium level, rich, and semi coating on the mouth for a few seconds. Carbonation is there yet it really does not show as much with the coating mouthfeel Not hot with all the alcohol, except at the tail end. Very satisfying.

This is a well accomplished beer, whatever it is, If this is what TH's was going for when they brewed this, than congrats to them. I really cant classify this beer as it has characteristics from 4 or so styles. I cant wait to try this down the line when bottles are released soon.

on tap at the brewery

Pours a hazed dark plum color with some ruby hues, topped by a thinner beige head. Sticky retention leaves some spots of lacing dotted around the glassware.

Strong and stiff in the nose, drenched in candied dark fruits, raisin, dates and figs. Boozy heat with brown sugar and vanilla. Heavy malt presence with edges of Belgian yeast.

Warm and a bit sweet right off the bat, filled with a cornucopia of dark fruits and candied notes. Raisins, dates and figs topped with hints of vanilla and syrupy booziness. You can feel the warmth from this one right up front - even after the first sip or two - flushing the cheeks in a rich, wintery warmth. Full backbone with caramel and bready notes followed by a familiar Belgian yeast tone. Finishes warm and a bit sweet.

Fuller body, lower carbonation, sticky and lingering on the tongue. This really drank more like a Belgian quad than a dark saison, and I found the heat to be a little on the aggressive side, although I typically enjoy higher ABV beers (provided it meshes with the profile). I'm excited to see how this develops in the bottle once they're finally released.

On-tap at the brewpub

Labeled as a dark saison, the body sits a reddish/purplish hue reminiscent of a quad or barleywine. Fairly clear with a beige colored cap that fell quickly. Little to no lacing.

The nose is sweet. Brown sugar, raisins, berries, sweet toffee, and a faint whiff of booze. This is not your average profile to a saison...let alone a dark saison. Very reminiscent of a quad, hence the name.

On the palate, a rush of berry sweetness with dried plums, raisins and figs. Brown sugar and grape skins with toffee and caramel. A little bit of a tart, wine like flavor emerges, trying to balance out the sweetness.

Medium body, syrupy. Rich flavors. Smooth drinking for 13%. Scary.

An interesting spin on a saison. If a quad and a saison had a baby, this would be the result. An enjoyable beer, but I am not sure I would have this one again, too sweet.
