Read a very funny travel book about hitchhiking across Japan and there was a mention of how highy in regard the Japanese hold their beer.Frist ting I notice is that Sleeman's brews this stuff...hmmm

Deeper yellow in color when compared to most macro's with a thinnish white head that receeds into a white ring around the glass.

Smell is grainy malt and not much more.

Taste is grainy with some dry biscuit aftertaste. Felt almost flat and listless in my mouth. Certainly wouldn't be flying to Japan just to sample beer if this is the best they can do.

Appearance: Light golden/pale straw colored, with a stark-white, soapy head that dissipates into a small ring of foam almost as quickly as does a head on a soda.

Aroma: Grassy, "cheap" hops, and little bit of musty graininess from the malt-rice blend.

Taste: A front of sweetness that lasts through the whole beer, but dies out from the middle into the end. Very slightly toasted maltiness. There's a flintiness that serves as an underlying character all the way through. During the middle and end, there's that "cheap", grassy hoppiness.

Body: The very light side of medium.

Finish: Dry, crisp, refreshing.

Overall, this is a great all-purpose lager.

This looks and smells what you typically think of when someone says beer. A bit malty and sweet, not very hoppy. Slightly metallic if out of the can. A little on the thin side with plenty of foamy head. The color a tan gold yellow. It smells like beer, tastes like beer, but is nothing grandiose or even very individualistic.

But where this beer differs from most is that is was seemingly designed to offset the saltiness of fish and Asian food in general. I see no point in not pairing this with food. This isn't a beer that sits on its own merits, but is a nice refreshing addition to a meal. And cold works best.

I can't think of a reason to drink this for its own merits, but I can't denigrate it when it is had with some nice sashimi or any earthy soyu-sauced dish.

So taken for what it is and what it does with an Asian plate of food, this is one of the better Japanese large brews out there.
