I just reviewed the Asahi Aqua Blue - too bad a beer with such a cool name is so lame.
This one, though... this one... It's actually bad. Not like coors light, where it's not good but it's whatever - no, this one is actually offensive.

I'm not going to go through all the "color", "aroma", "taste" stuff - i'll just jump right to the "overall" section.

Overall: Really bad. Smells actually like poop. I mean it really smells like poop. I'm going to finish it, because I bought it, but I'm just happy I didn't choose this beer as my final beer of the night. It's really bad.
Happoshus in Japan always have "Crisp! Sharp! Clean!" written on the can. That's lingo for "Bland! Tasteless! Boring!", but I didn't expect to find an actually offensive beer. Even Japan's inflation rate has evened out to 0% - why can't this beer be at least even on the taste scale? Is it that hard to make a beer that tastes like nothing? I don't think so - the normal sapporo tastes fine, why does this one have to suck so hard???

By the way, don't buy it. It's the same price as other, better ones. If it came down to the aqua blue and draft one, I would have to recommend the Aqua Blue, because at least it isn't foul.

12oz can. sampled sept 4/09.

pours crystal clear yellow with an almost greenish tint. the small cap of fine white head disappears almost instantly and leaves no lace.

aroma is odd. bad champagne. cheap hard cider. bit of vegetal character. light alcohol. white grape. corn and rice. bit of socks and sweat.

taste is like a slightly worse watered down version of the aroma. light alcohol. slightly more offensive sweaty socks character. less vegetal and less resembling a bad champagne (both of which would have been preferred). touch of bitterness. clingy unpleasant aftertaste.

mouthfeel isn't great either. bit of astringency. super thin and watery. medium-high carbonation level.

drinkability is pretty bad. having trouble getting through my half of the can. no depth. no balance. no redeeming qualities. more offensive than water and about as interesting.

Big thanks to Bobsy for picking this up for me in Japan! Out of a vending machine as requested, along with some school girl panties!

Pours a crystal clear greenish tinged yellow, almost like pond scum mixed with urine, thin bubbly white head forms, instantly settles to nothing, few bubbles come up. Smell is pretty vile, very sweet and corny, rice, light floral, grassy, apple cider, weird beany aroma, don't know whats going on here. Taste is like a lightly flavoured water beverage, lightly sweet and sugary, grassy, lightly fruity, really weird, rice, I think my tongue is going numb. Mouthfeel is very weak, light bodied, sparkling carbonation. Not sure why anyone would drink this, but worth the experience! Thanks Robbo!

Happoshu translates literally as "sparkling spirits"; Draft One does indeed sparkle, a bright yellowish tone with a light tint of lime. Its complexion is spotlessly clear with a large collection of bubbles that hop from the bottom of the glass like frogs leaping from a lily pad. There is no head although a soapy outline persists; swirling brings about the crackly sounds of carbonation but none of the visuals.

Happoshu is technically a beer-flavoured beverage much in the same way alcopops are fruit-flavoured beverages (in Japan in fact, many alcopops are categorized as Happoshu). This shares much of the same cloying artificiality, albeit without the redeeming sweetness. It smells off-putting, to put it kindly, and it is best described as more of a stench really...

So then, why is this so popular in Japan? Simple: money. Japan's alcohol tax system divides malted beverages into categories based on malt content; less malt means less tax. Happoshu - a beverage that, by legal definition, contains less than 67% malt content - is much cheaper than normal beer. Today, most Happoshu contains less than 25% malt.

Of course, Sapporo Draft One contains no malt - it uses pea protein. The brewery claims that it takes advantage of this pea-protein ingredient to make a beer that "has an unprecedented clear taste". Overlooking the obvious fact that 'clarity' is not something to be tasted - maybe we can chalk that up to poor translation - Draft One does taste pretty clean. This, undoubtedly, is the consequence of it having no flavour.

And no flavour is better than bad flavour (a category to which most of North America's cheapest beers would be classified under). Most domestic swill lagers use corn - and you can taste it. This uses pea protein - and you wouldn't know it. I bet this would actually go over quite well with a lot of North American beer drinkers, the majority of which just look to intoxicate themselves with something of little taste for a low price anyhow.

It's an unfortunate part of life that we sometimes have to make compromises. Chiefly, we can't always live the life we'd like to; we cannot always afford the items we want, this includes food and drink. The popularity of Happoshu is a direct reflection of that; it is a compromise itself - of price as well as ingredients, taste, quality and standards.

Bizarre game shows, karaoke, raw seafood and now Happoshu - there is a lot about modern Japanese culture I just don't understand. Whatever "neo-alcohol culture" Sapporo claims this "nationwide hot-selling product" to have created I don't really care to be part of it. That said, I was happy to be able to check it out. A huge 'domo arigato' to Bobsy!

this isn't even beer, at least not technically here in japan, it is happoshu. a beer flavored beverage. and it is funk nasty
looks very light and clear yellow, head lasts a few seconds. looks and sounds like ginger ale, fizzy.
smell is rotten apple and batteries in a bucket of water, at least it's watered down, not terrible. but I'm not dying to drink this.
tastes worse than the smell. its awful, more disgusting than corona light and coors light. it's harsh, difficult to swallow, metallic and just BAD. yuck. oh my god it's giving me a headache.
avoid!

Well, it could be worse. For a "beer" made without barley, it could be worse.
It pours a bright clear yellow, with a thick bright white head. There is a ton of carbonation.
The aroma is light and uninspiring. It's sweet, with a slight soapiness. It doesn't invite you to drink, which can't be a good thing, right?
The taste is extremely innocuous. There is almost nothing here. Sweet, slight bitterness, but mostly just nothing. Boring. But not actively bad.
The carbonation is over-active, making it slightly sharp on the palate. But it's very smooth, a side-effect of having so little to it.
Overall, it's an extremely boring "beer" with nothing to recommend it. It's fine if you want a thirst-quencher with alcohol in it, and have no money to get anything better. It's cheap. I'll give it that.

Notice that the ingredients I read on the can are includes sugar (tourui) not corn as the prior review did. I guess it just a difference in translation.

Not technically a happoshu as it has no malt content. This beer single handedly caused a decrease in the official beer and happoshu consumption numbers because so many people switched to drinking this.

Hazy yellow beer body with vigorous carbonation and thin white head.

Starchy aroma.

Thin taste, a little vinous acidity.

No body, just a harsh carbonation.

I cannot see why this is so popular, except for the fact that it is less than half the price of all malt beer.

Unimpressive cheap beer yellow with a head that flatlines, this is a beer meant to be drunk out of the can ;) A fruity, apply nose greets, and a sharp carbonation shakes your hand. The taste is not all that bad, but reminds of a non-alcoholic beer, i.e. something that would have "a beer-like taste" written on it. Notes of apples and pears. Light alcohol aftertaste, little hops. Quite drinkable.

Very cheap for japanese standards and utilizing a type of green bean, this beer gets points for being interesting.
