It was a hot humid day today, but now I'm sitting in the cool AC, and have some work to do, so this should sit nicely. Bottled 2/17/14, a few months old but not one that needed to be fresh so hopefully still nice.

Pours a super dark thick mocha colored creamy frothy 1/2 finger head that retains nicely, leaves some nice lacing as well, adn long legs on the sides even, pretty much no light getting through that murky black mess.

Nose brings chocolate right off, cocoa dust, mocha, a little roasted malt darkness and touch of roasted coffee, a mild fluffy marshmallowy nougat carafa like note, with some caramel and nutty aromas, a mild toasty biscuit note in the middle, and just a touch of a spicy rye in the background.

Taste starts creamy like there is lactose in there, but a bit thin at the same time surprsingly, then into mocha and cocoa again, some creamy mild chocolate and cocoa dust, with some mild roasted malt notes and roasted coffee, into more of that biscuit and toasted malt characters. As it warms a little fluffy nougat note but not much, touch of caramel, faint nutty note as well. A bit of a mild earthy hop bitterness in the middle, a touch of grassy and spicy notes, and very faint spicy rye that I really have to search for. Finish is creamy but dry, touch sticky, bit more bitterness as earthy hops and a touch of spicy rye come through, more cocoa, roasted malt, and caramel like malt notes lingering.

MOuth is med bod, a bit thick and creamy feeling but at the same time feels thin for what is actually there, strange, with decent carb.

Overall not bad, nice big porter flavors, very stouty actually, with nice cocoa, roast, caramel, dark malts, toasty, etc, and a nice hop character that backs it up doesn't take the forefront. Wish the rye came through a bit more, but I think it sits nicely subdued a bit in this beer. Only real issue is that despite feeling creamy and fluffy it feels a bit thin on the base like it's missing something. Otherwise nice solid tasty beer.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours opaque black with a half finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. Nice aroma of toasted malt, light chocolate and coffee and slight lactose. Flavor is toasted malt, milk chocolate, lightly charred coffee a light spicy fruitiness from the rye and mild milky lactose, nicely balanced. Medium bodied with some light creaminess, good for this moderate ABV. A nice porter with a pretty tasty variety of flavors. The rye presence is not that noticeable as a component, but seem to add an interesting light spicy flavor the otherwise toasty, lightly charred malt background. I'm pleased with this much flavor from a standard strength porter. A gift from my sister, but if I ever saw it again, I'd grab it.

Got $5.00 1PT 6OZ bottle in a local store.
In the glass looks and smells nice, not as dense as Guiness. Color is pitch black, as we say in Russia - "lights out". It's rye - definitely can tell after first sip. Bottle says "contains lactose" - I do feel milk taste in a very nice way. I like the foam on top stays for long pronouncing creaminess of this delicious beer.

Appearance: 1 inch head, opaque, black colored, with high carbonation

Smell: BOSCO, char, and light cream

Taste: cream and rye seed throughout with char, milk chocolate, and light white bread

Mouthfeel: medium body, sweet with char bitterness, moderate carbonation

Overall: Interesting super smooth brew that tastes a lot better than it smells. The beer gets a lot better as it warms as the rye seed becomes more pronounced. I would get this again.

a: Deep, dark brown; poured with a large, long lasting tan head.

s: Roasty coffee, a little lactic tartness, and a hint of sweet fruit.

t: Roastier than the average porter, which I like. Plenty of semi seeet chocolate plus some caramel sweetness and tart lactose keep this from crossing into stout territory. A little tingle at the end could be rye.

m: I think this is where the rye really comes into play. Soft and full bodied; much more than a 6% porter should be.

o: I just wanted to buy a random bottle of something local and I lucked into a stellar porter. Loved this one.
