Purchased at the LCBO for $2.85 473ml can. Served at 5deg C in a draught glass

A- Very good. Pours nicely with a good 2" head that thins to a film within a minute or two, as expected from an IPA. Unusually brown, must be the rye.

S- Pretty good. Hint of coriander.

T- Very good. Touch bitter as expected again from an IPA.

M- Dry and tart. Enough said

O- Very good. Will buy again. A bit on the heavy side but very good.

Food Pairing

This nice example of an IPA went well with... Chicken balls and fried rice.

Can: Poured a light clear amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and limited lacing. Aroma of light piney hoppy notes with light spicy rye notes. Taste is also dominated by light piney hoppy notes with dry rye note with light grainy notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. OK but there is really nothing memorable here.

A: Hazy copper with some carbonation, 2 fingers of creamy beige head. Good lacing.

S: Malty, orange, a little pine.

T: Heavy on the pine, hot pepper, malt back bone, dry orange citrus taste, white grapefruit bitterness, doughy malt comes in again. Light fruitiness.

M: Medium, somewhat resinous body, medium carbonation, dry finish.

O: Really delicious rye beer. I really like this one, and it stands up to the name. Very much one I would have when in the mood. Dry and somewhat warming, would be best in the Fall when this is supposedly released. However I got it in spring, so I am glad it was still around to grab this year.

Tall can from the Ottawa LCBO for $2.90

Appearance - Brown colour with an average size frothy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some amazing lacing on the sides of the glass. The head lasted for close to 5 minutes before it began to dissipate.

Smell - Malts, caramel, light hops

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel and malts mixed with light hops. There is also some roasted/toasted notes, a touch of citrus, and some rye

Overall - A decent offering I suppose. For some reason I was expecting something more along the lines of the Camerons RPA, which has some great fruity/juicy/hoppy flavours. This beer is more on the malty side but does manage to showcase the rye.

473 mL can from the LCBO; no freshness info. I've been trying to find this one for a while, and finally happened upon it while browsing in London. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy, deep amber-brown colour, topped with almost one finger of dense, creamy light beige-coloured head. Nice aroma; lots of citrusy grapefruit, floral notes with maybe a hint of wet pine. The underlying malts are harder to pinpoint, but a persistent nose might be able to pick out some brown sugar, toasted biscuits and spicy rye.

Great taste. Mild caramel sweetness, biscuity malts and rye bread combine to form a sturdy backbone, with the citrusy, pithy bitterness picking up mid-sip. Mostly grapefruit, with some leafy, piney bitterness and rye malt flavour in the finish, lingering on into the somewhat peppery aftertaste. Medium in body, with fairly light carbonation and a slick, smooth feel on the palate; sort of oily, like certain IPAs. This is a wonderfully balanced, delicious rye beer that I am particularly enjoying.

Final Grade: 4.01, a solid A-. This is the third Double Trouble beer that I've had the pleasure of trying, and definitely my favourite one so far. A welcome addition to the Ontario beer scene; this should provide some solid competition for Cameron's RPA - in a pinch I'd probably prefer the former rye beer, but Fire in the Rye comes in a more convenient format and is of similarly high quality. Not available locally at the moment, but you can bet I'll be grabbing cans on the regular if/when it does.
