Was talked into this beer at a German restaurant. Overall, the ABV of this beer is well hidden behind a sugar-y curtain. If you can get past this sweetness, this beer has some things going for it, but probably isn't for everyone.

Pours clear amber-towards-orange. The head remains at the edge, and provides some lacing. The nose is of sweet fruit, mostly dark, meaning date. There's also a heavy dense-bread scent, like bread pudding.

The taste starts almost overwhelmingly sweet, like straight sugar. This evolves to a light brown sugar and maybe into a molasses flavor. Underneath, the date and sugar-plum take hold. It is a German beer, and later in the taste, that becomes more evident to me. A spice note grabs the beer first to counter the sweet, maybe clove or nutmeg in nature, but it's not enough. Letting the beer finish, there is an obvious bitterness that creeps in to balance the sweetness, but it probably comes just a little late.

Pours a thin layer, white head that fades quickly leaving no lace. Crystal clear amber color. Very light carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is sugar and hints of alcohol, flavor is smooth and sweet, dark fruit, almost cloying. Similar to their classic. NOT a session beer - the 14% ABV is noticeable . . . savor this beer. $5.99 for a 330ml bottle, from Julio's Liquors Westborough, MA. Bottled in 2012.

Even a hasty pour of this 2010 vintage produced only a thin layer of lager-like head that quickly vanished. Similarities to lighter beers end there as strong vapors of toffee, marinated dark fruits and soy... yep, soy,...greet the nose. I poured this shortly after having a platter of sashimi and I felt I was back at the sushi bar. This could be a decent compliment to raw fish.

The taste is toffee, raisins, grapes (brandy overtones), and lots and lots of sugar. The mouthfeel is syrupy yet a bit sour. It's an interesting combo that makes this a unique brew. I can't say it's my favorite doppelbock (Aventinus is probably the examplar for me), but this winter warmer works despite the aggressive ABV. Yeah, it's a bit boozy and hot, but not as bad as many barleywines or TRIPAs I've had.

This was poured from a bottle into a tulip glass

A: Beautiful copper color. Very minimal head.

S: The smell of this beer is spectacular. I feel like it helps prepare me for the ensuing flavour

T: As it first hits your taste buds you feel the sweetness. It has a smooth candied flavour. There is a slight presence of alcohol

M: The mouthfeel brings the higher alcohol characteristic. It has a mellowing burn similar to that of a whiskey

O: This is a great beer. I don't think I could have more than one in a sitting, but one is just fine.

11.2 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a snifter
Bottled in 2007

A - This beer pours amber and hazy. There are chucks of yeast suspended in it. There was virtually no head.

S - It has a fruity nose. I smell some fig, dates, brown sugar, molasses, and raisins.

T - It has a sweet taste. It is kind of like candied dates. The alcohol is not anywhere in the taste, but if sure warms the cockles.

M - Syrupy.

O - It is a lot better than I anticipated. It has a pleasant fruitiness with no alcohol burn. Plus it makes me feel warm all over on anther arctic evening in the Midwest.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Light golden with one finger of white head.

S: Very sweet and sour. My first reaction is that it smells of apple vinegar but then I notice sweet raisin smell and caramel smells.

T: Very sweet with honey and caramel notes. A bit tart as well. It is sort of an apple tartness which I attribute to the alcohol. Also, it tastes of grapes in the way a sweet wine would.

M: A fair bit of carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel like syrup or something similar.

O: This is not a favorite of mine. It is very sweet and tart and might cater more to a wine drinker but for me it is too overwhelming in that respect.

2010 Vintage

Pour: Poured into a tulip glass. Color is a mix between light caramel and black tea, not much head at all from this bottle.

Aroma: A strong soy sauce and earthy, nutty character. There is also a caramel sweetness with a boozy finish.

Taste: Immediately I taste caramel, toffee, honey and agave nectar. Just like the nose, there is booze at the end but it disappears quickly.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is very low and almost unnoticeable. Very thick. It coats the mouth and lingers.

Overall: A lot sweeter than I imagined. If it didn’t have the booze at the tail end this would be a very mellow beer, but it is still enjoyable.
