A - Deep, strong golden color body. Mild clarity. Medium, white head that slowly dissipates.
S - Strong malt aroma, very low toasted malt and melanoidins. No hop aroma. Lacks diacetyl, fruity esters.
T - Strong pilsen malt, super sweet in flavor profile. Low caramelization. Low peppery phenols, and low-moderate hop bitterness. Well attenuated, dry finished. Hop note is subdued.
M - Medium body, moderate carbonation. For 14% ABV, alcohol warming isn't paramount.
D - Very pale, strong, sweet helles lager. Hop character is present compared to other bocks.

Lager-ed 10 months prior to bottling, mine was bottled '07 (December 6th - as the date all Samichlaus Helles is) and consumed November '10. Brewed in the Eggendberg Castle, this is another fine example of the world's best Maibock/Helles Bock.

Found one bottle of this randomly on a road trip in January 2013, been aging since then.
A - a clear cedar red-brown, head fizzled almost immediately but to be expected given the ABV (and possibly the age), but a steady stream of carbonation rises from the bottom of the glass
S - plumb and raisin, toffee and general candy sweet aroma, slightly musty
T - sticky sweet flavours of candied plumbs, mild apricot, caramel malt, mild woody flavour, and a generally sweet finish
M - sticky sweet throughout, just a little flat but nothing serious, sticky mouth coating finish, no real trace of 14% ABV until waaay late when your insides feel warm and fuzzy
O - ridiculously drinkable for its heft, the sweetness is big but creates a nice stance against the alcohol, not sure if the extra aging made any difference since I only found the one bottle, but a quality brew either way

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a pint glass, 2011 limited edition. This pours a nice brown red color with a mid sized but very short lived off white color. The smell is very sweet, lots of fruit, dates, raisins, malty sugar. The feel is medium to thick. The taste is different a little over the top, loads of sugar, sweet fruit, some noticeable alcohol, absolutely no hop bite to counter act.

positively onw of the most interesting beers ive ever tasted, and the friends i shared it with agree. it pours a really thick cloudy honey color, more red than gold, with a prominent two inch white head with solid retention. the nose is crazy, tons of residual sugar, spicy yeast, clove, and anise seed. the flavor is a little less on the spice, and a little more on the sugars. molasses, vanilla sugar, and even confectionary sugar. this beer is really sweet, but the interesting thing is that it doesnt last and rot the teeth. it has a surprisingly quick finish for how big it is. also surprising, is that the alcohol is hardly present until it gets up to about room temperature. must be all that lagering the keeps it mellow. tons of body, tons of strength. i can see this being a perfect post-church christmas eve beer amongst loved ones. in any other context, its almost too much. buy this if you see it though, nothing else like it.

Bottle from Hyvee in Council Bluffs, IA
2009 vintage
Poured into a Unibroue flute

Schloss Eggenberg's aged helles doppelbock is a classic of the style that recalls the darker, well-balanced doppelbocks several German breweries put out. Emphasis not only on sweetness, but on dried fruit, caramel, and rich bread qualities make this much less than a one-dimensional offering. I just wish they would package this in smaller bottles, so that I could enjoy it with less preparation / trying to find a drinking partner who is free.

Pours a 1cm head of small bubbles, off-white in color, that dissipates fairly quickly, leaving only a bit of spotty lacing and a very fine ring around the glass. Body is light brown, transparent, with active carbonation readily visible.

Aroma is of sweet caramel malts, raisins and dried brown figs, a bit of ethanol hanging delicately in the background.

Taste is of well-aged caramel malt sweetness, very refined. Also noticeable are dried figs, raisins, toasted bread. Ethanol is detectable at the back of the palate, but not in any overwhelming sense, which is quite impressive.

Body is medium to medium-heavy, with moderate carbonation that foams this up only slightly on the palate. Result is a smooth-flowing, fairly liquid beer. Ethanol can be felt slightly in the throat and nostrils, but not at any disagreeable level.

A - Golden ruby color with a thin white head that disappears quickly into tiny swirls of bubbles.

S - Very sweet smell, slight alcohol fumes that actually add to the character of the smell. Dark fruits and... a very faint Madagascar bourbon vanilla bean hint? No hop smells coming from this, all malt backbone it seems.

T - Sweet taste, really enjoying the after taste but I can pinpoint what it is. Dark fruits throughout it all, no citrus whatsoever. Lots of depth and layered sweetness. The closest thing I can describe the taste to would be J.W Lees Harvest Ale but more balanced.

M - Very rich and smooth, slightly creamy.

O - This is not tasting like a doppelbock... the bottle says it's a lager. It tastes more like an english barelywine (w/o hops) or a grand crue. I recommend splitting the bottle, this will knock you on your ass. You don't taste the 14% abv at all. Glad my buddy pointed this out, I would of never tried it. Is it worth seeking out, ehh... but if it is available and you have a buddy to split one with I recommend it. A great beer to drink on a cool night

Pours a hazy orange colour with no head retention. Smells like straight up apple juice. Very sweet and very fruity.
Taste is sweet, sugary booze with some aged whiskey flavours. Lots actually. Other than that, sugary and fruity all the way. It's delicious, but hard to describe. It's really not that complex. Just whiskey-sugar-fruit-booze. Damn good. You have to try it to see what it's like. It's really not something akin to any other beer I've had.
