Notes/Commercial Description:
The once strongest beer in the world is back! Brewed only once a year on December 6. Samichlaus is aged for 10 months before bottling. This beer is perhaps the rarest in the world. Samichlaus may be aged for many years to come. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Brewed under the exclusive licence of Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding, Switzerland.

A: Beautiful deep copper colour with reddish highlights. A white head forms on the pour, but collapses fairly quickly.

S: Rich, sherry like doppelbock aroma. Sweet malt and alcohol also come through.

T: Very sweet dessert wine flavour, but with a malty edge.Toffee, plum, port wine, caramel. Hop bitterness is low but balancing and no hop flavour.

M: Rich and fluffy. Very smooth.

D: A slow drinking beer - more of a sipping wine than a beer type experience.

This is really a different class of drink to most beers - it also deserves to be classed with fortified or dessert wines. Having said that, if you take it for what it is then it is a exceptional and well made beer. Fermenting such a monster can't be easy and the Eggenberg should be congratulated on producing such a unique beer.

Samichlaus Classic Bier pours a dark classic amber from a deep brown 11.2 oz glass bottle with a pry off cap.

Head went to about one finger before disappearing completely, no ring of foam, no islands of foam, and no lacing of foam or alcohol.

Nose is a major malt with whiffs of alcohol with herbal notes.

Mouthfeel is an extreme viscous with an abundance of malt saccharides and herbs. Little, if any of the 14% alcohol by volume can be detected. This translates to an extremely well balanced brew.

There is a lose parallel to EKU 28.

This is definitely a world class brew.

OMG, this is good!

A - Crystal clear, deep ruby body. Absolutely zero head retention which is fair enough for a 14% beer.

S - Deep pit fruit and maltiness. Nice caramel notes as well. Little to no chocolate and zero hops.

T - Extremely rich. Like drinking melted dark fruit cotton candy. Cloyingly sweet, but still a crisp flavor. Warming booze character. Borders on medicinal unfortunately.

M - Sticky, not as crisp enough for a dopplebock IMO.

O - Interesting beer, extremely flavorful. Not a text book example of a doppelbock, but fun to try. Much too sweet for my tastes.

Poured into a spiegelau glass. 2013 vintage.

A - dark ruby with honey edges. Fairly transparent.

S - vanilla and sweetness with slight toasty nuttiness. Smells delicious.

T- golden raisins and vanilla with some nuttiness and more sugar. Like sweet smooth honey milked from golden raisins.

M - full bodied but not too much.

O - absolutely delicious. A must have.

My ratings are loosely based on memory, as I was in neither the mindset nor setting for a proper tasting. However, I will say this: this beer knocks you out in the caliber of the craft and ABV. I had it for breakfast while visiting Spain, hardly appreciating its beauty. What I would give to try this again correctly... Don't pass up an opportunity to enjoy this.

Served from bottle into stout glass, very little head even with aggressive pour. This is a beautiful beer, pours clear amber/mahogany.

Strong nose, and on the palate... bam! This is a big syrupy, caramelly, honey-raisin-rummy, silky doppelbock! It's a very powerful taste and mouthfeel, definitely a dessert beer because this would be hard to follow.

Didn't even know what this was before buying it- But apparently, it's a Doppelbock- and those are one of my favorite styles, so here goes...

Poured from an 11.2oz Bottle into an Innis & Gunn Snifter. (Vintage 2012)

A: This is probably the most beautiful shade of amber-ruby I've ever seen- And it's absolutely crystal clear. Very much like Eku 28 (Also an amazing brew) but with a head that dissipates much more quickly. Ever constant bubbles travel up the sides of the glass, collecting in a ring around the lip. It looks like we're off to a good start.

S: Again, Just like Eku 28... There's an amazing nose coming from a generous use of what I imagine to be Victory Malt. Sweet burnt caramel, almost no mention of hops, and a touch of alcohol...

T: Words can't even describe what I'm tasting right now... Again, there is absolutely no hop presence... There's burnt or toasted caramel, an almost marshmallow like sweetness, and something in there that reminds me of the best cream soda you've never had...

M: Creamy, lightly carbonated, yet dense - sweet, yet bittersweet, delicate, yet heavy... This is one amazing blend of contradictions that have been melded together so precisely, it's almost impossible to know what's going on.

O: At $6.50 a bottle, I'd call this the bargain of the century... You'll never find a more perfect embodiment of what a doppelbock can be. The Austrians have come up with one amazing beer... If I ever see this again, I will most certainly buy it again, and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever tasted beer. Simply Amazing...
