It's a great beer - but I'm confused by calling it a red ale. This reminded me much more of a Porter. I really don't know what this beer is - but I like it.

I have really enjoyed almost everything I have sampled from this Calgary brewery, and The Woodsman is no exception. The rich colour and beige foam make it a lovely looking brew. The nose is not overwhelming - a bit of dark fruit and rich malt. The taste is quite nice - rich, hearty caramel and an overall "woodsy" feel. I would not hesitate to pick up another Woodsman. Wait...that might not have come out quite right...

Appearance - Pours a dark copper with a finger of bubbly white head.
Smell - orchard fruits (plum), leafy hops alongside a hint of citrus and piney hops, bready malts.
Taste - Starts off with the plum followed by the leafy hops. The citrus and piney hops are there but not as predominate as the leafy hops. The bready malts help to finish the brew off.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering malty sweetness and hint of bitterness.
Overall - This brew isn't too shabby at all. The hop level needs to be increased to make it more true to the style. Nonetheless, a solid brew from the folks at Village.

330ml bottle - wow, could the simple listings for this brewery get any more screwed up here on BA? Kind of what happens when people either don't fucking read, or worse, try to add new beers by apparently guessing (?!) what a brewery is going to do. Did I say fuck?
This beer (right in front of me) pours a clear, dark red-brick amber colour, with one skinny-ass finger of wanly foamy, somewhat bubbly, and yet maybe a tad creamy beige head, which leaves some rocky promontory lace around the glass as it rashly subsides.
It smells of well roasted and grainy caramel malt, muddled black orchard fruit, a further wet ashiness, pithy bar-top nuts, earthy, and mildly phenolic yeast, and faint citrusy, leafy, and piney hop bitters. The taste is bready, grainy, and toasted to a lesser degree caramel malt, dry black licorice, bittersweet cocoa powder, a twinge of cafe-au-lait, and a hovering leafy, piney, and herbal hoppiness.
The carbonation is nice and level, what with its generally supportive frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and mostly smooth, just a wee hint of char continuing to make itself a nuisance. It finishes still off-dry, the base caramel malt doing well to persist among the detritus of roast and hop alike.
Overall, not too shabby a brew, the 'northern' part of the red ale designation seemingly due to the preponderance of cooking and warmth-providing fires, in camps and backyards, both. Or something like that - whatever their intention in that respect, Village Brewery has produced a pretty solid offering here.

Village started out as a cool concept, but unfortunately its regular beers--the first ones, at least--proved pretty average. A wit that was inconsistent from batch to batch, a bland blonde, and a competent dark ale. And that was it.
But then they started with the seasonals. And the one-offs. And that's really where they started shining: a great session IPA, fantastic IPA, really compelling "community involvement" ales, and a chai spice porter that I wish was available year-round.
The Woodsman is the latest entry in their one-off and seasonal collection, and while it's not among their all-time best, it's a good beer with a well-chosen name: dark, almost cola in color (two fingers of quickly receding head, but solid lacing), with lots of pine and resin hops, and a strong coffee/dark chocolate malt backbone. Slight herbal, licorice flavours. Nice body, balanced, not-too-heavy carbonation. Initial sweetness that turns rather dry. Bit of a woody, cedary character, even? Hard water, slightly metallic.
I will enjoy this six-pack thoroughly.
