BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Old Black Bear Brewing Company
Alabama, United States | website

Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A German Dunkel inspired American Amber Lager with a signature hop aroma. This lager combines mostly Munich malt with the addition of gently balanced caramelized malts giving it a rich copper color as well as a bit more malt backbone and overall character than the typical amber lager. The complex combination of noble hops enables our lager to be paired with a wide variety of food items, and its clean lager finish creates a beer that will really hit the spot on those hot summer afternoons.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass. The appearance is a dark ruby black color with a small tan head. The aroma is roasted malt and nuts. The taste is very similar to a nut brown ale.

A: crystal clear; deep amber in color; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a thin collar; very little lacing;

S: molasses with coffee in the background;

T: caramel, coffee, a hint of nutmeg; no hop character; very mild bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: an odd beer; very drinkable, but nothing about it made me think "amber lager". It was inspired by a German dunkel - I didn't get that connection either. additionally, I didn't get any of the hop character that the can promised;

Overall I'd say this is a solid beer. Definitely an amber and representative of the style with the creamy maltiness. It looks beautiful in the glass, pouring a nice dark brown with cream head. I've had better and I've had worse, but I'd gladly drink one any day.

Appearance - Listed as an Amber Lager, but is surprisingly dark for this style. Very little foam.
Smell - Malty with a hint of coffee.
Taste - Quite possibly the best tasting beer I've had. Caramel and coffee, quite malty with a bit of hops.
Mouthfeel - Medium body with a nice malty aftertaste.
Overall - I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I had quite a few craft beers while in Alabama and this one definitely stood out.

Pours a beautiful deep brown/amber color with an unimpressive head. Virtually nonexistent. No lacing. Smells like malted barley and hops. Very sweet aroma. I'm sensing some raw pumpkin in there as well. Tastes like spiced pumpkin with a semi-dry hopped aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth, but finishes crisp and over carbonated. Unimpressive body. Kind of flat. Overall, it's a subpar brew. The color is fantastic but everything else was mediocre. Taste and nose were flat and the body was weak. Try it out for curiosity sake, but don't buy a 6er
