look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4

Presentation: 0.33l cute short and stubby brown bottle with a flip-top ceramic lid. Freshness date on the back.

Appearance: Pours a clear and bright, rich amber beer crowned with an off-white head that's sticky, clumpy, frothy and lasting. Most impressive.

Smell: Smooth and pleasant on the nose. Toasted grain, faint herbal background. Big bready character, like that initial bread in the oven aroma.

Taste: Smooth mouthfeel, light-bodied. Malts hit first with a simple, yet enjoyable, toasty character -- sweetness is balanced. This is followed by a hop flash of citric, rind and salt on the palate and a lively carbonation. Things go a bit coarse at this point and merge with a grainy, bitty, tannin character. Wraps up with a slight roasted character that dries the mouth and leaves a residual bready flavour.

Notes: A very well-done Dunkel, balanced and traditional. It's also easy on the palate and very refeshing.

Presentation: 33cl brown reusable swing-top bottle with a drink before date on the back label.

Appearance: Crystal clear brassy hue, patchy yet chunky lacing that leaves random web-like trails as the brew is sipped.

Smell: Fresh and bready aroma, smells of a toasted all grain loaf .. very clean with some fresh malt in there.

Taste: Fluffy crispness, moderate body and quite smooth. Clean malt throughout, modest toasted malt rolls from bread crust to a cracker like flavour. Hops are even with a simple bitterness with a touch of herbal flavour. Finishes slightly dry with lots of clean graininess.

Notes: An easy drinking amber lager, clean with full grain flavours is just what I was looking for in this beer. Typical in a way but good none the less.

Brown, clear, rising bubbles, fair head and lace, Ii'll work on appearance.

Malty as hell, almost octoberfrest material but a bit heavier, caramel malts big time, biscuit and bread, hops presence only balances but doesn't stand out.

Thick and chewy, yet lagery. An interesting break from the various IPAs and PAs I've had in the last few weeks. Love varying the style, this one ain't a bad example either.

Flip-top 33cl bottle in Mommseneck (Haus of 100 Biers) on 17th Jan 2014.

Dark amber to brown body, off white head that produced some impressive lacing.

Malts rule the whole beer: mild, semi-sweet molasses give the brew a pleasant aroma and they also impart flavour into a body that was disappointingly thin. The bodies lack of depth shouldn't come as a surprise though, most German Dunkel beers I've had have been weak in the body texture and almost watery.

This is one of the better Dunkel beers I've had though, so don't be put off by my complaint about the body depth.

First new brew of the New Year. Sampled on 1/2/14. Comes in a pretty 330ml cool bottle with a ceramic stopper. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours a pretty copper/amber in color with a 1-finger off white head. Some sticky lacing was seen with each sip. The aroma is of a sweet dark bready malt. The taste is about the same with just a slight hoppy finish. Very light though and not bad at all actually. Overall a good dark brew.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(4/12/14 best by date)

L: orange, dark brown, about 95% clear -- a slight mistiness hangs in the column, but it's by and large clear; little head even with a hard pour

S: malty, sweet bread/biscuity ... almost like a donut shop

T: fruity, floral ... at times like an old ale (prunes, dates) including the first sip, but it tends to take on the light, fruity sweet notes of an English pale ale; little hop presence

F: watery and slick with little carbonation; that hard pour robs it too much

O: it's got lots of sweet malt notes, especially in the nose, but overall it's underwhelming. better dunkels surely exist.
