Poured into pint glass, it showed dark copper with a head that lingered for only a moment. Smells malty and slightly spicy. Taste is a little watery and has a slightly coppery aftertaste.. I was disappointed and it reminds me of every other dark german beer you can find in a well-stocked supermarket. I could still drink this all day long watching football and eating standard bar food. Not great... but better than budweiser.

Presentation: 0.33l cute short and stubby brown bottle with a flip-top ceramic lid. Freshness date on the back.

Appearance: Pours a clear and bright, rich amber beer crowned with an off-white head that's sticky, clumpy, frothy and lasting. Most impressive.

Smell: Smooth and pleasant on the nose. Toasted grain, faint herbal background. Big bready character, like that initial bread in the oven aroma.

Taste: Smooth mouthfeel, light-bodied. Malts hit first with a simple, yet enjoyable, toasty character -- sweetness is balanced. This is followed by a hop flash of citric, rind and salt on the palate and a lively carbonation. Things go a bit coarse at this point and merge with a grainy, bitty, tannin character. Wraps up with a slight roasted character that dries the mouth and leaves a residual bready flavour.

Notes: A very well-done Dunkel, balanced and traditional. It's also easy on the palate and very refeshing.

Presentation: 33cl brown reusable swing-top bottle with a drink before date on the back label.

Appearance: Crystal clear brassy hue, patchy yet chunky lacing that leaves random web-like trails as the brew is sipped.

Smell: Fresh and bready aroma, smells of a toasted all grain loaf .. very clean with some fresh malt in there.

Taste: Fluffy crispness, moderate body and quite smooth. Clean malt throughout, modest toasted malt rolls from bread crust to a cracker like flavour. Hops are even with a simple bitterness with a touch of herbal flavour. Finishes slightly dry with lots of clean graininess.

Notes: An easy drinking amber lager, clean with full grain flavours is just what I was looking for in this beer. Typical in a way but good none the less.

Fliptop bottle pours a clear coppery body with a large beige head. Plenty of frothy lacing left on the glass. Aroma is toffee, caramel, spicy hops and some apple skins. Medium body and a nice medium carbonation. Taste opens with malty toffee and toasted grain. Hops quickly answer with a nice balance of spicy and earthy noble bitterness. Very solid for style though the color was lighter than expected.

Poured out of a 1/3 liter rubber stopped bottle my sister brought back from Germany.

Poured a clear, medium brownish red with good carbonation and a lightly tanned head.

Smelled earthy with a little residual sweetness. Also caught some hoppy herbal notes.

Not as sweet on the tongue as the smell led me to believe. There was a little caramel to it, but also a alittle toasted and herbal spice to finish off the flavor.

Mouthfeel was lighter than expected, but still would consider a medium-bodied brew.

Cool bottle with stopper (bought it pretty much just because of the bottle, gimmick worked). Frothy thick dark head, cream colored.
Smooth malty taste, coffee? dark amber color, cloudy. smooth malty but bolder notes, not as creamy as expected.

I would probably get again.

Purchased this bottle for $2.65 per single at the local beer store. Surprised I had never seen this before, as these Munich Dunkel Lager's are certainly my favorite type of beer. The ceramic stop-top initially drew me to the bottle, so I was hoping it would taste as fancy as it looked.

Poured the brew from the 12 oz. bottle into a nonic pint glass and was surprised by the color. It poured much lighter than I thought it would, pouring a translucent mahogany color with very little cream head that did not leave any lacing on the glass - just how I like my beer to be.

The initial smell is that of a toasty caramel and malt, very typical of the style and nothing out of the ordinary.

The taste is quite complex - moreso than the appearance leads on. As with the smell, the overwhelming taste of caramel is featured here, but there is also an appearance of wheat, oats, and some diacetyl, along with the roasty malt and slight yeast taste; very interesting and complex.

The finish and mouthfeel are a bit dry, which is a testament to the slight bit of wheat in the beer, though it could very well be due to the malt, I'm not entirely sure. Very little carbonation makes this brew quite easy to drink as a session beer.

This beer is great looking and delicious, one of the better beers in one of my favorite styles. I'll definitely be on the lookout for this one more often. An absolutely fantastic dunkel recommended to anyone who wants to try this style or is looking for something a notch up from the Warsteiner that's typically the most prominent dunkel imported in the United States.

Dark ruby to amber color. Smell consists of sweet malt sugars.

Typical lager flavor with added light toast notes and some sugar. Tastes okay, but it isn't drop dead gorgeous mouth erotica, just good.

Mouthfeel isn't all that notable, it is really that average.

As far as the dunkel world goes this beer certainly is on the lager end, so no confusion there. It has that character that is almost always in lagers due to there yeast, and then it has some of the darker malt and sweeter side that the Dunkel truck delivers.

355ml stubby brown bottle dated best-before July 31st 2007.

Pours transparent red-brown with an inch of quickly-disappearing head and sparse lace. The aroma is straightforward, full of sugary caramel malt. The flavor is, luckily, more complex. Grainy toasted malts and hops are predominant, with touches of banana bread on hard mineral water. Finishes with a balanced sweetness and dryness, leaving toasted bread and hop notes. Medium thick (nearly syrupy) in the mouth, with almost still body and spare carbonation. Not particularly outstanding, but a nice beer with lunch.

Stubby flip-top bottle, served in a Konig-Pilsner chalice-style glass at Resi's Bierstube. BBD: 08.05.09 Freshness is key!

Reddish auburn body, mottled tan on the surface of the foam. Visible carbonation, a nice clarity to it. It looks very appealing.

Grain, malted barley, a hint of apple and brown sugar in the nose.

Toasted malt, vague apple with a very light hop essence at the end that dries up on the palate. Light bodied and fresh tasting. Very clean and simple flavors that are essential to the Dunkel style. Not artificially sweet like many other Dunkels i've tried.

Why does it come in a tiny bottle, when it should be served on draft by the liter?

Low key, sweet malty aroma touches on maple syrup. Dark amber in color with an attractive fluffy two finger thick head that is mostly lasting. Light sweet malt in the fore invokes honey cakes and sweetened grain cereals. Very well made with no off notes and a beautiful appearance, but the flavor is subdued and the body thinnish.

Poured from a 12oz fliptop bottle with a date on the back label. Good head and almost no carb. Had a brownish cooper color and a sweet malty smell with overtones of bread. The taste was really good. This is the first of the style that I've had and I was impressed. Will have to try move Dunkle Lagers and see if it holds. The only thing I didn't like about this beer was that the mouthfeel was pretty watery. Not enough to ruin it but enough to remind you on every drink. Overall, good beer and recommend. (4, RR, T, Y)

This one was a nice deep copper color, topped off with a thick tan head, very fluffy and stuck around for a bit; there's some great lacing too. The body itself is clear with medium carbonation. Mild hop flavors are the first thing you taste, strong grass flavors come into play and the aroma is pretty much a copy of the flavors, wheat grass, hops, and a mild sweet smell all mixed into one. The taste is slightly bitter overall and its light bodied, plus its goes down pretty smooth.

Got this one in a decorative growler in a recent BIF. Brought it out on Labor Day to share with the family. Served cold and poured into a couple pint glasses. This one was consumed on 09/07/2009.

The pour was off from the start. Still, motionless with only a touch of light carbonation on the top of the glass. I new we were in trouble. Nice honey color to it though with some darker touches around the sides that served it quite well. Aroma was decent, very sweet with lots of caramel and honey notes as well as lots of touches of nuts as well. Warming almost brings out a touch of fruit now. But the flavor really falls off. It seems as though it comes across musky and stale, the fact that it is flat does not help at all. A wash of bready malts, touches of grain and a hint of caramel all seem to miss and this quasi wheat and fruit note comes in, with a wet cardboard flavor. Not working out at all. The flavor was a mess and this really caused it to be semi undrinkable and nearly a drain pour for me.

Overall it may have been an old growler, though it hissed when opened and the date on it was three months from now. It just did not work for me. Maybe next time.
