On tap at the brewery served in one of their taster glasses which looked larger than 4oz. Dark black, decent head. Aroma was roast malts, belgian esters, eh. Flavor was a little better and felt like a hoppy porter with a belgian twist. I was glad I got a sample because this was not something I would like a bomber of or even a full pour.

I visited this brewery last night for the first time, and was pleasantly surprised and impressed. All belgian styles- yes please! This one stood out for me as an exceptional example of black ipa.

A: pretty run 'o the mill, not much here, just murky black and dark as night, small wispy head with a little bit of retention

S: Burnt marshmallows, caramel, roast grain and some charr, the roast flavors are there but not bitter or overpowering. They meld well with the citrusy and floral hop notes

T: again more charr and roast, which is smooth and well integrated into the overall flavor. There is a small hop punch at the end. There is some crystal malt sweetness and maltiness which changes to a small hop contribution. Well balanced and nothing overpowers you

M: medium-thin bodied and easy to go down. Fairly slick

O: Overall a good black ipa that leaves you wanting more. It is approachable but still complex enough to keep you interested. This is a good beer for those looking to get into some more complex hoppy or belgian styles.

this is an interesting brew, it pours a very rich looking dark chocolate color into a pint glass with a one inch off white head floating on top. good retention and lacing. smell is way more coffee than hops for a black ipa. definitely some bitter hops in the nose, but malt and coffee dominate. flavor too is more coffee than i expected for an ipa, hops only really present in the finish, which is quick and crisp. a hint of smoke in there as well. feel to me isnt right for an ipa, its got a big thick stout-like body on it, and not enough carbonation to make it sessionable. its more of a porter to me, but its very tasty. overall an ambitious brew for the new river north, and one id be happy to drink again.

On tap at the brewery, their take on a black IPA, belgian style. ~ 55 IBUs and ~6.2%ABV according to the chalkboard. The beer is served in a pint glass and arrives a clear though dark brown, almost black color with a 1/2 finger tan colored head with decent retention and lacing. Brown edges when held to light/ The nose is somewhat muted but pleasant with coffee, chocolate, roasted barely and a light belgian yeast character. The flavor is more pronounced and sweeter than the nose lets on. There are hints of coffee, milk chocolate, some earthy hop character, and even hints of oak. As suggested by the server after half the beer was consumed I let it sit and came back after a couple minutes, bu letting the beer warm the belgian yeast and character is more prevelent, though still light. More malty than hoppy. Lighter end of medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, not really what I was expecting but it was good. I would have preferred more hop character but the beer is an easy drink for sure.
