22oz into a pint

A - Pours a black with a few amber highlights. Not totally thick. Lots of mocha colored head formation. Well retained with a little lacing.

S - Lots of dark chocolate, bittersweet. A hint of hopping in the background.

T - Starts off with dark fruit flavors, very deep. Some dark chocolate notes as well. Mid-stream gets some roast - a little bit burnt. Hopping does sneak in there, some floral notes. Bitterness builds. The yeast doesn't really show that much. Finishes with a burnt oak flavor that sticks around quit a bit in the aftertaste.

M - Full bodied beer, moderate in carbonation. Very sticky and oily aftertaste.

O/D - A good RIS that doesn't really bring in the Belgian style like the label. As a RIS, it has a nice flavor with some good hoppy notes. Certainly hefty, is a bit filling.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and Belgian yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and yeast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a noticeable Belgian yeast quality in the aroma and flavor.

22 oz bottle. Pours inky black with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet grainy chocolate malts, dark fruit, and some bourbony alcohol.

The flavor is sweet roasted chocolate malts, tart dark fruits, some black licorice and a roasted bitter finish with some bourbony alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with creamy carbonation.

Overall, a decent imperial stout. All the roast kind of clashed with the sweet, slightly tart, fruit.

Tasted 26 June 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours black with about one finger of light gray-brown head. Pretty solid.

Smell is nice as well, though a bit inauspicious. Rich malts dominated by warm chocolate, with a soft touch of Belgian yeast from the back. But there's something about it that seems, hmm, not quite infected, but definitely a bit off.

Taste confirms my suspicions from the smell. It starts out fine, very briefly, but then a metallic, mildly bitter, slightly tart flavor takes over. It bends toward the bitter, burying those otherwise-delicious deep dark choco malts. It's like a good imperial stout with some weirdness layered on top of it. And the only hint of Belgian-ness is a peachy fruit flavor that I can just barely pick out.

Feel is good. Full but not heavy, rich and mouth-filling. Carbonation feels like marshmallow fluff. Perhaps the high point of the beer.

An odd beer. Could have been really nice if it didn't have those metallic and tart flavors in there. Definitely gets better with increasing temperature; the bad bits stay the same, but the good ones come through more clearly.
