From a 650 ml (Batch 1, 2012, Bottle 413) into a snifter.

A-The brew pours thick and dark. The color is nearly black. A short dark-brown head gives way to a patchy ring of foam. Nice look for the style.

S-I smell a fair amount of whiskey and heat. The is some caramel, light vanilla, and mildly sweet dark chocolate. Lower on the malt than some of the style.

T-Taste is also heavy on the whiskey and a touch hot. Nice sweet, caramel and vanilla mixture with a lightly bitter chocolate note coming in towards the end. Finish is light oak.

M-The feel is on the thin side for the style.

O-This brew has potential. The whiskey character is right up front and a touch hot, but the booze is not overpowering. Flavor is decently complex, and the appearance is great, but the thin feel is a bit of a letdown.

Bottle 379/708
2012; release 1

Nice thick lasting caramel colored dense toffee head. Brew is medium thickness and oil black.

Deep roasty coffee and toffee along side dark robust chocolate. Lots of NICE whiskey scents, not dominated by typical vanilla.

Thin, simi-sweet, chocolate flavors. Carbonation is a nice lighter side of things. Flavors are well rounded and complete. Toffee and caramel blend well with deep roasty chocolate. Thank goodness there's no smokeyness...

A nice BA Stout, but not one of best out there; needs to thicken up quite a bit.. Not quite deep and complex enough for top dog. Extremely flavorful and enjoyable though... Recommended even @ $17/22oz.

Label info: Bottle #88; release #2; year 2013

Bottle was given to me by Todd during BA sponsored, first-ever Christmas pub crawl December 07th, River North Brewery was our after-hours/last stop. I don't know why he put this in my hands as I stumbled out the door and to my hotel room, but I'm grateful (and had a hell of a good time)...

Tar black body with a thin yet persistent tan head. Molasses, cocoa and bitter chocolate, coffee, and black licorice notes make up the aroma. Rich, malty flavor, reinforcing many of the aroma characteristics with some added boozy warmth. Heavy body, velvety and smooth.

Repeated sips reveal more of the whiskey barrel tones; kind of like someone added a twinge of quality bourbon to the beer. A great blending of dark ale and whiskey barrel flavors from the barrel aging process. Deep, dark, complex and very enjoyable.

This poured out as a deep brownish black color with a decent brown colored head on top. The lacing and retention are minimal. The smell of the beer is decent, deep roasted malt with some whiskey on the nose. The taste wasn't all that great in my opinion, intense roasted saltiness with some whiskey in there too. The mouthfeel is this was decent with a body and carbonation. Overall this beer just didn't hit home for me. I really wanted to enjoy it but it didn't really do much for me.

Vintage 2013, bottle 656.

Appearance: Pours out a dark brown color, which appears an opaque black once in the glass. About 1/2" of khaki colored head forms, which has nice retention and lacing, and settles down to a thick ring. Nice looking stout.

Smell: Nose of roasted malts, dark chocolate, tobacco, whiskey, and hints of oaky barrel. Very well balanced and complex nose.

Taste: Nice balance of sweet and bitter. Starts off with roasted malt bitterness, followed by bakers chocolate, with a finish of whiskey and barrel notes.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Only real complaint is that the beer is pretty thin for the style. Maybe a touch over medium bodied. It does have an appropriate level of carbonation, however. Overall, I enjoyed this stout. With a heavier, more coating mouthfeel it would have been exemplary. As it is, just very good.
