Appearance: Displays a very dark brown body layered with a slim, pale beige head. Already, the carbonation seems mild, but it's being served through a hollowed pumpkin, so it's all good, baby.

Smell: Firm, crisped roasted malts in the nose, but also some charred toast notes. Not overtly sweet-scented baker's chocolate. Pumpkin and apropos spices are present, but not the chief focus of the aroma.

Taste: It's roasty, chocolaty, still with the burnt toast quality, but also some sweet caramel and slow, low wave of spicing. Prompt pumpkin flavor, but, as with the nose, it's not overblown. Instead, it's well-integrated with the dark malts. Drying, dark malt finish with a subtle spiciness.

Mouthfeel: Just a hair over medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: Burnt Hickory Brewing, ladies and gentlemen.

This was a special cask version of Die Kreuzen Imperial Pumpkin Porter with maple syrup added.
From a cask at the 2014 Sweetwater Brew Your Cask Off Festival.

look: Dark brown with some cola highlights. Tan head with wisps of lingering lace.
smell: Roasty Porter and aromatic spices compete in a good way.
taste: really nicely integrated Porter and Pumpkin, and aromatic spice. Smooth and mostly dry. Very tasty.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 9.99. No bottling date but this was released late September/ early October. Served in a Burnt Hickory snifter.

Pours a dark brown, like black tea, with a three quarter finger tan head. The froth shrinks to a broken halo, leaving some wide bursts of lace.

Snells of chocolate, spiced gourd, brown sugar and perhaps it is my imagination but I get something like pie crust towards the back end. Nice.

The flavors open up similar to a molè stout with a good bit of spice and chocolate. Cinnamon, pumpkin, roast malt, chocolate, brown sugar, caramel, pie crust and something I perceive as oats. Almost no noticeable alcohol. The pumpkin and spice additives are well integrated but the base porter shines through.

Creamy, medium body with fairly soft carbonation. Finishes with a pleasing spiced chocolate pumpkin note.

I think Burnt Hickory may have done some tweaking to the recipe over the past year. I've enjoyed this in years past but this year I think it is substantially better. I'd never before noticed how excellent the base porter is and the added pumpkin and spice create a delicious seasonal accent. This is a great pumpkin porter and worth a try for fans of the style.

Poured from a cooled bomber into a tulip.

A: Pours a dark chocolate brown with a foamy off-white head that quickly thins to a ring but lacey nicely throughout.

S: Notes of pumpkin, toast, coffee and a little toffee.

T: Light roast with notes of pumpkin and spices. Coffee and pumpkin.

M: Medium bodied, a little thin for a porter. Some carbonation keeps the palate from getting cluttered with pumpkin.

O: A nice-tasting beer that could use a little heft through the middle, it is nonetheless satisfying and with a well-hidden ABV. This was my second helping and I enjoyed both sessions.

Appearance: Hazy brown - off white head

Aroma: Big nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove adjuncts. Touch of some darker malts.

Flavor: Aforemention adjuncts rounded out with a toasty, bready, quality and hints of pumpkin.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, pretty drinkable.

From the bottle, it pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Chocolate, pumpkin and spice in the nose. I note spice and chocolate in the mouth. Enjoyable.
