Thanks to Wowcoolman for sharing this one at drewone's tasting.

Bottled 2/21/13. 2013 release.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, brandy, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with fruit and brandy flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a very nice brandy presence in the aroma and flavor.

The very first Barrel Society brew so I think it's been in the cellar since March? So 8-9 months?

Orangey tan color with a thin puddle of foam in the middle. Smells like cantaloupe, melon and toffee. Melon like that Cucumber Melon Bath and Body works lotion all the ladies wore in high school. Tastes like it smells. Very light and springy caramel and fruit salad. A little brandy comes through in back as it warms.

Glad I waited. I lot of earlier reviews mentioned heavy caramel and heat whereas I got no heat and light, springy fruit notes.

Reviewed blind as part of Blind BIF 8, courtesy of Auror. Poured into a tulip.

A - Murky brown that lets some ruby-orange highlights through. It has a few fingers of pillowy, off-white head that takes its time and leaves chunky lacing down the sides.

S - A little sweet, fruity balsamic vinegar, a touch of band-aid funk, and perhaps oak? I have a feeling this is going to be very weird in a good way.

T - Okay, this is tough to describe, so bear with me. There's a base of sweet, smooth toffee and vanilla, with some mellow oxidation and maybe a little oak. It also has a hint of yeasty funk, and the slightest shadow of sourness. Everything is so rounded and the flavors melt together seamlessly, there's not much in the way bitterness or acidity or even a prickle of carbonation, which is surprising given how vigorous both the cork and head were. This is weird, and I like it.

M - The mouthfeel is fantastic. Silky smooth and pretty thick, but not heavy. I'm gonna give it a 5!

Again, this is weird, and quite tasty. I'll go out on a limb and say it's bourbon-aged, though the barrel flavors are rather mellow. Regardless, it's delicious and getting even better as it warms.

Non-blind comments: I have no idea what that slight funky/sour note was, but my roommate corroborated it (without my telling him anything about the beer), so I don't think I made it up. Whether or not it was intentional, it worked quite well with this beer. I'm a fan.

The first beer in the Barrel Society series.

In a large wine glass the beer was a hazy dark amber color with a small tan head

The aroma was mostly some caramel malt. It was on the sweet side. It was also a little bit boozy.

Nice taste, though. Caramel came through the most. Some honey. A little bit of orange. And at the end, some cognac.

Very smooth. The alcohol was there, but didn't intrude. Sweet.

A second bottle has been cellared, to be had in 2014.
