Bottled on 5/28/2013. Poured into an stemmed Offero Omnis glass.
Pours a very bright and clear amber – almost orange, with a small but delicious looking head. There’s a lot going on in the nose. Heavy banana and clove are at the front while an acidic wine smell emerges afterwards. Oak from the barrel is present along with grapes, pear and to a lesser extent, lemon. The aroma is quite perfumey, but not in an off-putting way. One the palate, the flavors in here are just as complex as the nose. Again, banana and clove, but also nutmeg. There’s a pleasant tartness in addition to that common buttery flavor that wine barrels give off, but it’s fairly mild. There’s good carbonation which helps bring out all the flavors in this Tripel. This is a superb offering from Night Shift. I’m looking forward to finding another bottle to see what some age can do to this one.

The beer pours dark golden yellow-orange, like a fiery sunburst. The beer pours with a big sudsy head of larger, white bubbles that fizzles away to a nice scrim. In body, the beer is clean, but opaque, and full of tiny bubbles. On the nose, the beer is sweet and funky with beautiful, sticky vinous notes of light lemon, and a nice brininess that smells slightly reminiscent of low tide. Slight sweet leather notes can also be sensed on the nose. On the tongue, the beer tastes vinous sweet with a nice acidity and a light tannic bitter that builds in the mouth. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet, pinot gris with a touch of salt and oak. Sweet citric grapes build in the mouth, becoming slightly cloying and honeyed in flavor. Honeydew melon and light breadiness cross the palate in the finish, providing a light flavor of grape skins and tannic wood. The aftertaste is lightly salty sweet. In the mouth, the beer feels medium heavy in body with a viscous, slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Carbonation is sharp and prickly on the tongue, leaving the mouth dry with but sticky with a nice bitterness on the back. Overall, this is an interesting beer with some nice pinot gris notes. Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of pinot gris, but I appreciated the nuances of it. The beer is complex but suffers a little from the cloying sweetness, and a little too much bitterness from the oak. It’s a good beer, but I think it would do well with a little more time in the bottle to smooth out the edges of this beer.

Ale is light amber with a loose soapy white sheet, slightly hazy. Smells of chardonnay barrels up front, then some fruity ale yeast, some grain, some coriander character, some light acidity, some floral and pineapple bits. Flavor is nice and delicate on the Tripel aspect with light grains, some yeast and clay character. The pinot juice comes through really sweet on this part and some of the oak and butter from the chardonnay character comes through. There is a touch of earthiness that would have been well accented by a touch of Brett lambicus to finish the product. Medium bodied with moderate carb and a semi dry finish. This beer is interesting, the tripel aspects of the beer are overshadowed by the grapes and barrels. I think the beer would have been greatly improved with the addition of a Brett strain or even a Saison yeast to start with...
