750ml bottle (batch #2, bottled on 9/4/13, 4.6%) poured into an Idle Hands tulip.

A - Pours a pale, hazy golden straw color with a big two fingers of rocky head that lingers for a short time, slowing fizzing its way back to the surface.

S - Spicy on the nose with some cloves and a bit of phenolic band-aidy aroma. Big citrus component - lemons and a big orangey aspect that is really nice. Smells more saison'y to me than Belgian Pale Ale, but I suppose the style cross over a bit in some examples. At any rate, smells pretty good...a good start so far.

T - Firm hoppy bitterness that comes on early and lingers throughout and past the swallow - a bit medicinal in character. Phenols, yeasty esters, cloves give a spicy hit. Big citrus as in the aroma, mostly oranges again. Noticeably saltiness that catches on in the middle and lingers to the finish and gives a second taste on a lick of the lips. I didn't notice the salt so much on the first pour, but having the entire 750ml myself, the second pour into the glass brought it out much more (temp change, salt settling in the bottom of the bottle - didn't notice this in appearance, but wasn't looking for it either). Towards the end it becomes so prominent that it begins to detract from the beer.

M - Lightish body, firm medium/high carbonation with a good tingle to it. Big saltiness, a somewhat medicinal bitterness that lingers long, nice fruity aspects.

O - This smells really great, and the first half glass left a mostly positive impression. The further I got into the bottle the more the salt became noticeable and then eventually overpowering and a focal point of each sip. I'd kinda like to give this a try on tap to see if there was a salt settling issue in the bottle. Interesting beer...glad to try it.

Bottle dated 9/3/13. Batch #2, 4.6% ABV.

A: Pours a hazy sort of pale orange. Very large and frothy white head. Great head retention with a constant island hanging around. Thin and splotchy spiderweb-like lacing.

S: Very spicy, primarily a black pepper aroma. Some cloves to back it up. Kind of an herbal hop aspect to it too I think, like a traditional amber would have. Very mild citrus shows up once it warms. Unique.

T: Well, pretty much what you'd expect. Very salty up front, followed by a BIG black pepper burst to go with it. Minor cloves and some decent citrus in the middle. Light grainy malt follows in the finish with lingering mild salt and pepper in the aftertaste.

M: Decent medium body for a 4.6% brew. It's uh...salty. And spicy too. No heat, just black pepper spice.

O: A salt and pepper beer. Certainly a unique offering from a brewery that doesn't seem to know how to make "normal" beers. That's not a knock against them of course, it's just the honest truth and I'm sure they embrace it. Honestly a little tough to wrap my head around it but it's pretty good. Honestly it tastes a lot like a gruit more than anything.
