Pours a healthy two to three finger head, deep tan color, dense microfoam with an even surface, adequate stick to what lacing is there, nice retention. The liquid is mostly opaque, a murky brownish core which fades to a mix of muddy yellows and oranges around the rims, not much visible by way of carbonation. The nose is quite sweet, developing strong currents of milk chocolate, molasses, licorice, custard and ginger spice, verges on prune, plenty of dark fruit scents, layers itself well without ever fatiguing your nostrils. In the mouth, however, it is a little heavy and the carbonation is somewhat weak and unable to create meaningful lift off the palate. That said, the flavors are vivid and sure to please any sweet tooth, anise, cinnamon, chocolate, coconut, brown sugar, honey, some graininess along the lines of honeyed bread. Plum to prune, cherry, apricot fruit dominates. Mild char to it relieves some sugariness. Strikes me as an “nightcap” sort of beer, relaxing after dinner. Not sure I’d want to put down more than a couple of glasses. But what you do drink would please for sure.

A Belgian Strong Dark Ale from Monkish? Sounds good to me.

Appearance is black. You can hardly see through it. Good foamy head that retains itself pretty well.'

Smells sweet. Notes of dark fruits and bitter chocolate are there. Also a little bit of roastiness.

It tastes great. The sweetness really comes out. Henry, the brewer, tells me that he brewed with some flaked oats and wheat to give it a smoother mouthfeel which is definitely noticeable. I love this.

Overall, it's a great beer. I got a growler fill of it because at 8.5%abv, I can easily drink this all week. Cheers!

On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. Totally black in the tulip. Modest head with tangy carbonation. Huge flavor of licorice from the first sip. Dark roasted malt, burnt sugar, and a sweet craziness. Expansive candy taste along with the charred barley. Sweet but shading off into that Belgian yeasty dry tang.

The licorice keeps coming up in the aroma. This is a more convincing Belgian beer than most. It even has those peculiar off flavors that make you wonder what is going on, and provide more complexity. Interesting brew on the dark side, darker than anything I've had in the Strong Dark Ale style.
