Kalamazoo Stout poured from the bottle dark brown in color; in the glass it was nearly pitch black. Granules of yeast sat at the bottom of the glass. The head was a finger of sandstone colored frothy lather-like foam. The lace was intermittent, but remained sticky.
The smell was creamy and sweet with a significant roasted character, light chocolate notes and an almost camphor-like trace of anise.
The taste was dominated by roasted and toasty flavors. Bittersweet cocoa, dark fruits and a burnt caramel taste as it warmed. The charred flavors played nicely off of the green grassy hops and their bitterness. The finish started lightly sweet before turning powdery dry.
The carbonation was moderately active and the body was medium to heavy giving this one a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
Very nice, flavorful, well balanced and highly drinkable.

Poured from a bottle into a pilsner glass. 5/1/14 is the freshness date
A: Pours black with with thick tan foam and tons of lace
S: malts and chocolate and coffee. The aroma is a bit weak but I can pick out the individual notes.
T: sweeter than I thought. cocoa and malts mostly with sweetness on the finish
M: Middle of the road but very drinkable.
O: not my favorite from bells but I wouldn't turn it down if it was offered to me.

On tap at the House of Brews. Served in a snifter.
Appearance - Black. Small khaki head. Thin collar and a few stray streaks of lacing.
Smell - Roasty malt. Kinda ashy and burnt. Coffee.
Taste - A little more sweet than the nose suggested. Coffee malt. Roastiness builds into the finish. Very burnt and acrid in the back, but it's not excessive. Some sweetness lingers too.
Mouthfeel - Medium body. Very drinkable. Medium carbonation.
Overall - Very roasty. Intense and flavorful.
