12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.
Kalamazoo stout pours up pitch black with only a few garnet highlights emanating from the bottom of the glass when held to light. Head is one finger of tannish foam. Actually died pretty quickly and did not lace.
Nose is basic, subdued. No big roasted or coffee/chocolate pulling through. More of a dusty undercling with some faint molasses. Stouts aren't big in the aroma dept. anyway, so it's not a big deal.
Flavor profile is distinct, maybe because of the brewery's licorice. I'll confess, I honed in on sleuthing out the flavors this ingredient would uniquely impart. All I got was a sort of soy saucy taste in the middle which I've detected before. Standard bitter coffee grounds show up and the hops at the end are only to balance and pleasantly earthy.
Mouthfeel was a bit watery. Carbonation was low, which I welcomed.
I'd recommend this. Good not great--one problem may be that I was tasting this alongside of Bar Harbor's Cadillac Mt. Stout, which was incredible. Makes me want to try the Expedition to compare with Brooklyn BCS.
