Poured into a snifter.

4.0 A: Black color. Two fingers of dense frothy, light brown head. Retention is average and a good sized ring of lacing is left.

4.5 S: Great nose on this. This has the coffee with creme thing going. Plenty of coffee with a vanilla like milkiness. Also lots of chocolate to accompany a moderate, though supple roastiness. Licorice adds yet another layer of complexity. Really pleasant.

4.5 T: Taste is much like the nose. Plenty of coffee, chocolate, vanilla creme, and licorice, which is a bit stronger in the taste. The roastiness if more aggressive, but still in a good range. Really tasty.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Creamy for the body, but I would prefer a bit more body and creaminess.

4.5 D: Really great beer. This one surprised me. I wasn't expecting it to be this stellar.

Appearance - Spent oil black, completely opaque body with an finger or so of light tan head.

Smell - Toasted malt smell with a fade into a very sweet plum/chocolate aroma. Even with a 6% ABV you can smell the alcohol.

Taste - Sweet licorice/smokey start with a quick fade to a more bitter, not quite dark chocolate aftertaste. The taste lingers for quite some time.

Mouthfeel - A little more carbonated than some of the recent stouts that i've had. It works well, the body is not to thick, but has enough character to linger on the tongue.

Overall - "Good" is the best adjective to describe this beer in my opinion. It is good, but doesn't really have any qualities that really set me off or make me really think hard about the flavors. It is a solid beer, but not one that I will be thinking about for too long.

Poured into a D'achouffe snifter. No readable freshness date.

A- Pours a pitch black color with a 1/2 inch tan head that settles into an 1/8 inch head with nice stringy lacing.

S- Heavy malt nose with notes of caramel and cereal grain. Has an underlying smokiness to it. Dare I say it smells like burning? Ha.

T- Rush of roasty malts upfront with an abrupt metallic taste afterwards but doesn't spoil the fun. Wow, this is the first stout I've ever tasted that nails the burnt toast flavor to a T. One would think it'd be unpleasant, but it's not since the alcohol content isn't too high. A bit bitter with afterthoughts of coffee, nuts and yes, just a hint of licorice flavor that's not as prevalent as I was expecting.

M- Thick and oily with a pang of hop bitterness on the palate. Medium carbonation.

O- I must say, the apprehensive nature of this beer is impressive. Here you could have an extreme beer with a 9% ABV, loads of carbonation and a bunch of licorice dumped into it. Instead, it's a humble 6%, as much carbonation as is needed and doesn't have an overabundance of licorice, so you can actually drink more than one without being weighed down by unnecessary alcohol and intense flavors. Yet again, I say Bell's is the shiznit.
