Notes/Commercial Description:
Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 11/15/11
*From notes

-- Vintage 2010 --

A: Dark, brooding black. A generous pour yields a killer 2.25 finger cascading mocha head. The retention is top notch, as is the lacing which rims the glass.

S: Dried and candied dark fruits with just a touch of smoke.

T: Really a massive dose of char up front. Yeah, this is aging beautifully. Though it's rather roasty, there's still a solid hop kick on the mid, even after it's been in the cellar for a year. Black coffee runs from the mid to finish, and it lingers for some time.

M: Just over the top. It's silky, creamy and velvety. It feels like a penthouse suite in mouth.

O: Bell's Expedition Stout is easily one of my favorite non-BA RIS's. It's big, bold and brash, yet deceivingly elegant and easy to drink. This has aging potential unlike many others. Though a bit pricey, it's worth every cent you'll pay.

A hearty recommendation.

A pint at Harrison's in Cary, NC on 12/13/11.

Black with decent lace until the head disappeared about 10% into the beer. Aroma is dark roast coffee, raisins, and a whiff of alcohol. Soft mouthfeel, possibly a bit too soft (on the flat side). Oily rich body. Flavor makes me think of rum-raisin ice cream with a fair amount of sweetness, dried fruit, and a noticeable alcohol presence. Finish has a healthy bitterness to it.

Thanks to heyta for sending me this one!

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter
Bottled 12/17/2010 (Batch 10105)

A: Ridiculously black. No light getting through. Some carbonation evident with a semi-vigorous pour. Any cap that appeared quickly vanishes leaving, well...not much. This appears oily and quite viscous.

S: Dark chocolate, cocoa, licorice, black pepper and roasted malt.

T: Bitter chocolate and coffee, licorice, and roasted malt. Also a bit of caramel that helps transition you to the finish. Alcohol shows up early but it’s not as much as you might expect. The coffee, chocolate and malt are wonderfully intense! This is a pretty hot one but I like it.

M: Pretty thick...heavy body. Carbonation is on the low end of the spectrum but it’s enough to keep it lively.

O: This is a delicious tummy warmer. I drank this before its prime to do the review, but I’ve got a second bottle of ‘10 and another from ‘09. I’m going to sit on these for awhile and hopefully collect some more vintages.

2010 12oz bottle, nice extra from Josh - thanks mang! poured into tulip.

pours an oily near-black. thin, brown head, recedes to a whisper of foam. nose - burnt toffee, warm alcohol. taste - big, full flavor, bitter front end, some coffee notes, nutty/cocoa middle, dry finish.

excellent mouthfeel, great sipper as it warms.

very nice stout, love to try it again.

12oz bottle poured into an ale glass

Appearance-Pours pure black with a very thin brown head forming. Not noticing to much lacing.

Smell-Initially got a whiff of the alcohol but as it sat for a moment the alcohol smell has become minimal. Get dark chocolate with a slight toffee smell. Hints of vanilla throughout the roasted malt aroma.

Taste-Smooth chocolatey taste at first than a roasted bittering taste to finish. Good aftertaste that is slightly boozy for a split second than cascades back to the roasted chocolatey goodness.

Mouthfeel-Great creamy mouthfeel. Lightly carbonated. What this beer should be.

Overall-This is a very enjoyable beer that does not taste like it contains the abv labeled. Disappointed with the appearance which was lacking lacing and the brown frothy head some people here have stated. However I enjoyed this beer and cannot wait to see how it taste after aging!

Enjoyed in a 5oz glass as part of a 6 beer flight at Bell's Brewery...

Appearance - Poured a deep dark opaque brown/black color, thin brown head which left some nice lacing.

Smell - Molasses, dark fruits and dark chocolate, with faint vanilla and cream.

Taste - Starts semi-sweet coffee n cream with some carmel which quickly lends to burnt toffee, dark fruit peels and licorice, drying to a nice roasty finish. Alcohol is well hidden, and adds warmth between sips. Very nice.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full mouthfeel, very substantial, heavy and mouthcoating, carb is somewhat low which gives a fuller mouthfeel but adds a nice crisp nuance to the drying finish.

Overall - Great depth and complexity here, wonderful balance, rich and silky smooth. Two thumbs way up, and a case in my trunk to bring home. Will age a least a 6xer of this.

Batch 10759 pkgd 11/1/11. Poured into a Founder's tulip

A- Pours almost jet black. Not a very lively pour. Very little carbonation. Lacing is minimal.

S- lots of roasted charachter. Nice aroma. Some molasses and chocolate behind the roasted barley.

T- love this flavor. Very well balanced beer. Plenty of roasted barley, coffee molasses.

M- Assertive. Deep, dark, thick. Everything a stout should be here.

O- spot on RIS from bells. Textbook, except for the carbonation and lacing. I'll be sipping this one all winter long by the fire. Wearing my robe and bear claw slippers after a tough day at the rat races.
