Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 01-10-2002

Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Bottle dating has this bottled in August of 2013 so it's fairly fresh.

A: A deep dark black color that allows no light to come through. A normal pour produces a 3 finger light brown and reddish head. Nice full glass lacing sticks.

S: Lots of stuff going on here. Dark chocolate, roasted coffee, espresso, tobacco, tar and some dark fruits. Wow.

T: Follow the nose on this one. Loads of dark chocolate, coffee grinds, huge roasted flavors, some tobacco and slight dark fruit flavors. Not much sweetness on this one and then the finish turns into a bitterness bomb. Alcohol is tasted at the end but is very well mixed with the other flavors. The beer is a bit edgy when young, so be ready for it. This is a fantastic and complex beer.

M: Full, coating, prickly, bitter and alcoholic. Nice.

O: This is a top shelf stout that will stand up with the best of them. It's fantastic fresh but quite extreme when young. I also know it ages with the best of them so don't be afraid to stash a few of these away. I bought an entire case and will be enjoying them over the next 2 years.

Awesome beer, not for the faint of heart, but if you like extreme beers, this one is it.
