Style | ABV
English Brown Ale |  5.80% ABV

Availability: Fall

Notes/Commercial Description:
A smooth, toasty brown ale with hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Cask o' this appeared at my local Green's. A no-brainer.

A. Awh shucks, y'know.. it's a brown ale on cask. Low dirty white head, no lace, beer is russet and has a little depth to it. Not totally clear. A deeper red than actually brown, but I'm not complaining.

S. American malts here, easy, some mild roast, brown bread, delicate sweetness, some tame hop character.. it's all very mild and approachable. Cereal-y, hedgerow, damp dirt roads and a shining sun above. Working class and honest.

T. American hops, hopes & malt through and through here. Good blend of gently toasted, biscuity malt that has some sugar left and a slice of bittering, yet reserved cones. A little bit of fruit too, the starchy and sweet kind that makes good juice. This beer isn't one that takes well to picking apart... it just "is". Drinks very well.

M / D. Just a great beer to put back, the very low (cask) carbonation here makes this a Southern Slammer. If you don't know what a Southern Slammer is, don't ask me, I just made it up. Sounded cool. Anyway, this is super easy to drink and enjoy. Really, just enjoy it. Enjoy the delicate and free play of semi-sweet malt that dances with the lightly bitter grassy hops and just put another one back. Enjoy that one too, then call up that friend you haven't seen in 4 months and invite them over to drink with you. I'm going to kill a growler tonight.

Not *quite* as enjoyable as what comes out of the 5-liter mini-keg, this is still the best American brown ale this side of Moose Drool and potentially in the top 5 in the nation.

The kkipple bottom line: (kkbl) : Recommended, no matter the serving type. The next time you see some sucker toting a 6 pack of NewCastle at your booze-dealer, slap it outta his hand and steer him towards the Bell's Best Brown.

A- Thick off white head that dissipated quickly. Medium lacing. Dark brown in color.

S- Roasted nuts and hints of caramel. Slightly earthy.

T- Slight hop bitterness up front with plums, toasted bread through mid palate and finishing with roasted nut and caramel sweetness

M- Light bordering on medium body, creamy and dry.

O- Overall a very enjoyable brown ale that will always be welcome in my glass!
