12 ounce bottle poured into a wine glass. The label on the bottle has a funny cartoon character. Anyhow, the body of it pours a near black with very little hear, a ring soon sits atop. Smell has dark chocolate and coffee. Taking a sip of this and I taste roasted malts, quite a bit of dark roast coffee and some chocolate. Mouthfeel is velvet-like with a bittersweet finish. This is fine double/coffee stout and I am glad that I picked this up a few weeks ago when I was in Philly.

Batch 8315

A - Pours a completely black color that let no light through. There was about a 1/4 inch of foam that quickly disappeared into just a layer of fine bubbles.

S - Strong coffee flavor with hints of bitter chocolate

T - roasted coffee, malt and a bit of a dryness in the finish

M/D - This is like drinking a coffee mixed with soda. Nice flavors throughout, the carbonation was a little more than I expected. I will stick to just one, but will definitely have again.

Pours a near black with a light brown head that exhibits pretty good retention; nice patches of lace. Aroma is dominated by roasted malts, with touches of chocolate, coffee and an oatmeal sweetness. Taste is of coffee and chocolate frosting, with a hearty, roasty finish. The sweetness makes for a sticky mouthfeel, although its creamy, too. Quite drinkable -

Picked up a single from the Scottsdale AJ's back in late February for $2.99. Part of Batch 9462 bottled 11-19-09.
Beer poured black as night with a bubbly brown head. Nose is sweet mocha and hints of coffee. Taste is heavy on the roasted malts, coffee, sweet mocha, with a bitter coffee hop finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and fairly smooth. Drinkability is pretty good. This is a pretty good beer in which the abv is pretty well hidden, but it is not for the faint of palate as the finish is very strong on the coffee beans-it reminds me of the expresso beans from Trader Joes.

12oz Bottle poured into a chalice. It is jet black with a brownish head that falls fairly quickly to a just a covering. Smell is kind of hard to get, but there are dark roasted malt with coffee overtones.

The taste is like the smell, bitter roasted malts, java, nice hop finish. It seems the coffee flavor gives it the bitterness, like expresso. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Very nice. The drinkability is good, but not great.

I am a coffee lover, but the aftertaste of this beer kind of reminds me of coffee that is made too strong and cooked on a burner for a couple hours. This is a good beer and would love to try on draught. The drinkability suffers a litte from the aftertaste but is still slightly above average.

A: Poured with a mud-like brown color to my glass. Quickly topped with a rich frothy mocha-tan head, but that was gone before I knew it.
S: Cold and bitter coffee. Slightly metallic while cold. A hint of hazelnut.
T: Like a mocha from your local coffee shop. Sweet and bitter together. Smooth milk-chocolate flavors.
M: Creamy, but less viscous that the beer appears. I could see as I poured it that this one would present like most other stouts, but lacked something in body. This deficit is palatable, but doesn't ruin the beer.
D: True to its name, Java Stout brings together the best of coffee and beer in a classic way. I found this one to be a great example of the style and wish it was readily available. Another good beer from Bell's.

#29. I have a keen fondness for Bells Brewery and was fortunate to get a single bottle of this (a move I usually make as it is easier on the wallet). Of course, this review will dictate whether I should spring for more of them! ABV is on edge at 7.5%.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle to a Nonic Pint glass at room temp.

(Appearance) Excited pour produces a thick light tan chocolatey frothy head. It retains quite well and lacing is thin but plentiful as it recedes. Color is pitch black with deep ruby edges when held to light. I see very little carbonation, but then again, it's tough to see far at all into this beer. The appearance couldn't be much better than this. 5

(Smell) Very earthy pure coffee beans and medium-sweet cocoa are very pungent and bold in this beer. That plus some roasted toast malts and some slight hoppy high bitterness makes this beer smell strikingly wonderful. I can even gather slight scents of milk chocolatey cream and nuts. Smell is bold and inviting. 4

(Taste) This tastes strikingly similar to coffee with a very high bitter and sweet finish that hangs around for a long while. "Java" is pretty much right on key. This beer has a characteristic bitterness at the finish that comes from some hops in this brew. Ultimately the bitterness comes out on top and overshadows some of this beer's other qualities. It could sink further into the background so that the cocoa and coffee bean tastes can be easier to determine. Largely this beer is filled with bold taste characteristic. If you're into coffee, you're going to like it's flavor. Otherwise, the dominant coffee edge is going to turn you away. It does well regardless. 4

(Mouthfeel) Very very smooth and creamy. Full bodied of course, but nothing that would alter my enjoyment of this beer. Bitter finish leaves this beer quite dry. Carbonation is too low to interfere much with the consistency. Overall drinking textures are silky, creamy and smooth. 4

(Drinkability) For it's super heavy tones, easy to drink in moderation. A complementary dessert beer that comes off being incredibly bold and intense. That plus a slightly above average ABV makes this beer hard to go for more than another round. It is a taste bud overload and very filling, so I don't recommend drinking this much like coffee lovers might drink cup after cup of espresso. An average drinker for a fine beverage. 3

Verdict: One of the boldest most intense stouts that I have ever had, but impressive all around. If you enjoy java, coffee or espresso as much as you enjoy beer, there's no doubt that this will fill your cravings. Everything tastes pure and real and the end result is a well done coffee-heavy beverage. Definitely worth a try for everybody. Bell's Brewery did very well for this one. A- (4.1)

12oz bottle poured into pint glass

a-black with a small khaki colored collar around the edges..no head and no lacing..very little carbonation

s-wonderful to say the least..my favorite part of the beer..roasted coffee and espresso..butter chocolate and rich malt bill hold this together nicely..

t-roasted coffee..seriously thats about all but its what i expected and it represents the style very well..slight roasted malt in the middle..

m-a little thin for my taste but does coat the mouth well..more carbonation would have been nice...

d-abv is hidden well and doesnt leave a mark...lack of carbonation and thinness leaves me wanting more from this beer..but could steady a couple in an evening

overall a very good coffee stout not the best...valdez really heads this category imo..but rated to style a solid contender if it were cleaned up a bit..

pitch black with a sizable mocha colored head that retains for a bit and laces okay.

dark roasted malts and some watery, yet burnt dark coffee.

burnt coffee, bitter chocolate, roasted malts. a bit charred.

a bit lighter bodied than would be ideal with decent carbonation and a charred finish.

drinks okay. nothing special, unfortunately, though its heavily charred/ash/burnt character sets it apart from some others of the style. pretty good.

A - Pours a very, very dark brown. There is a large tan head that has good retention.

S - Smells of coffee, roasted malt and chocolate.

T - Very similar to the nose. Coffee and roasted malt flavors come through first and the finish has a dark chocolate bitterness that brings the flavors together.

M - Nice and fluffy, medium body.

D - While I like the taste, the sweetness may preclude me from drinking more than one. Good beer though.

Aroma: green or very light roast coffee, sweet caramel, no dms, no diacetyl, nice.

Appearance: black with mahagony highlights. Tan head with large bubbles.

Taste: coffee not as prominent as the aroma and is more apparent in the finish as bitterness. Chocolate and a little bit of burnt flavor.

Mouthfeel: slightly thiner than expected. Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: solid coffee stout, I was expecting more body which maybe I shouldn't have. You can drink a couple of these in a row. As usual a solid bells beer.

Pours out very dark, with a nice tan head leaving a good lacing and plenty of head stays on top. The name says it all, this one definately smells rich of coffee. If you don't care for coffee, it might be too strong, but to me it smells awesome. Taste starts with a bit of coffee, and then some sort of green flavor comes in, not strong, but I can only seem to describe it as fresh vegetables straight from the garden, then the taste shifts back into a bitter chocolate flavor before joining back up with the coffee for a choco-coffee finish. Med-high carbonation, thin little bubbles bounce around on the tongue, light bodied and pretty dry. Mouthfeel doesn't say Double Stout, says more Irish Dry Stout to me. I imagine this would be nice just about any time during the day, breakfast would fit in well with this, but it becomes a bit cloying by the end, one bottle would be enough. Definately worthy of a try and I could see myself having more, but probably wouldn't break my regular lineup.

Looks beyond dark with a milky dark chocolate head. You can catch slight bits of red light sneak through only right at the edges if you move the glass around in the light. Aroma brings a fistful of thick ultra roasted coffee beans. Its bitter, dark, robust, and pointy with some cocoa and sliiight vanilla under there. Nice aroma though the roasted smell might be clouding some other more subtle mouthwatering scents. Taste matches real well with some added dark fruits, bittersweet chocolate and bitter coffee bite. Very nice. Intense flavors and certainly entertaining. If you don't like strong coffee you probably will find this over the top. Texture is grainy but slick. Nice light velvety smoothness in there too. The carbonation mixes with the burnt roasted coffee bite and adds sharpness. This is certainly drinkable but its intensity is forcing me to take it easy.

Great for a first drink after sleeping in real late on a lazy day.

12oz bottle poured into a 12oz mug.
Re-review from deleted review.

This beer is a dark almost black brown with deep roasted chestnut high lights. There's a finger of mocha colored head that's fading into a thin collar. It's leaving frost like lacing.

The nose is black roasted coffee beans, a little baker's chocolate, and burnt malts.

The first gulp follows the nose very closely. It is loaded with coffee, baker's chocolate, dark grain. There's a slight sweetness in front and a strong coffee bitterness in the back end. It's a huge coffee bomb.

Mouthfeel is medium with medium to low carbonation.

One of the better coffee beers out there even though it's not as complex as some others. I could drink a couple of these in a sitting.

This one is opaque and almost completely black, tan head at the corners of the glass. Smells of chocolate and strong java coffee. The smell reminds me of coffee from Starbucks. Tastes of strong coffee, some chocolate, some sweetness, followed by a strong bitter coffee flavor. Mouthfeel is heavy and smooth. Nicely carbonated. I love having coffee stouts on brew day! Although very nicely done, I prefer FBS.

Pours jet black with a good size brown head that leaves enough lacing on the glass.

Smells of sweet coffee.

Tastes of a coffee flavor up front, followed by a caramel sweetness. Some molasses type flavors peek through. Big focus on coffee though, and it is well featured.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, but nice and smooth.

Bottled 9/10/12 enjoyed 3/6/14

A- Black and clear. Very dark. Light hardly penetrates but leaves a red hue when it does. Tons of sediment swirl around the glass when agitated. A caramel colored one finger head leaves a light cap. lacing is abundant.

S- Roasted malts with a hop bitterness. Coffee behind.

T- Well the taste of this brew is it's best attribute. Bittersweet malt/hop feel with a coffee backbone. Good not wonderful. A little hollow. Also nutty.

M- Med-heavy bodied. Creamy and smooth. This brews new best attribute.

O- The further along I go the more I like it. Possibly due to temp but I allowed it to warm up a bit from the breezeway. This is good but in direct comparison to Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout it is a close second. Sure don't hate it!

Received as an extra in a trade with Kiefdog.

Appearance: Opaque black with ruby hues. Little to no head with fast dissipation. Decent lacing.

Smell: Espresso, chocolate and alcohol. Uber roasted malts. Brown sugar as it warms up.

Taste: Bitter espresso and chocolate. The finish is not overly bitter, which I often find in coffee stouts. I'm not a huge coffee stout fan for this reason but this actually has a pleasant coffee finish - it doesn't have that coffee breath taste.

Mouthfeel: Moderate to heavy carbonation with moderate viscosity for a stout.

Drinkabliilty: Because there I'm not picking up that nasty bitterness, I find this coffee stout a tad more drinkable than most in the style.

Overall, I think it's one of the better coffee stouts I've had.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a shaker pint.

A- Pours black into the glass with a short lived 2 finger head. No lace retention on the glass.

S- Smells of black coffee and malt. Also some background chocolate notes.

T- During the first half of the glass I felt like I was drinking a coffee soda due to the sweetness and carbonation. Later in the glass I felt more like I was drinking a stout, since the carbonation subsided. Overall the tastes of black coffee and chocolate are nice. This is a very sweet beer.

M- To me this seems a bit thin, and early on it seemed over-carbonated. As I said, it seems like a soda. If this were a bit thicker and had less carbonation I think it would be a lot nicer. I'm liking the second half of the glass better than the first.

D- This is a good beer, but not as full-bodied as I hoped. I like coffee and stouts, so I had hoped I would really like this. For the price I think I probably won't buy this very often.

Agressive pours yields a thick dark brown head. Beer is dark like oil.

Very strong roasted malt scent. The java component lends another level of funky smell.

Lots of bitter chocolate and roasty malts on the drink. Its a very sweet flavored beer. The sweetness almost overcomes the other components but somehow stays in balance. I'm not finding any direct coffee notes, but maybe I'm trying too hard. Plenty of chocolate, though.

This beer drinks pretty thick & heavy. It's good. This is a high quality beer.

12-ounce bottle poured into a shaker pint yields an opaque ebony body capped with a thick dark finger of creamy mocha foam that retains at a fat ring briefly before collapsing entirely and leaves thin rings of lacing that melt away, too.

Smell is French roasted coffee, dark and smoky, with spicy, tangy molasses.

This is no 'coffee bomb', nor a 'cappuccino with booze in it'-style drink. In fact, Java Stout is so light-bodied and mild, 'Imperial Stout' is never a term that even pops into mind as I drink it.

Taste is coffee, surely, but sedate, and sweetened with brown sugar. There is a lightly acrid smokiness and a note of dry, grassy hops kicking around. A black coffee-style, lightly astringent finish has a faintly dry bitterness that lingers.

The drink is smooth, a little creamy, and medium-bodied with good carbonation and great drinkability. I always claim these coffee brews would be good for breakfast, brunch, or whatever, but this one is mild, sweet and refreshing, and would be good anytime.

Too light, refreshing, and drinkable to be an 'Imperial Stout', but it tastes and feels great, so... so what?!

Had this a long time ago when I was first trying some Michigan craft brews. It was way too early for me to like it back then but now I've grown to appreciate it more...

The appearance is nice with a dark brown/ black color with a half finger of off white/tan head at first that dissipates down to a thin sheet of bubbles.

The smell is mainly coffee with roasted malts, espresso and chocolate there too. It's really nice, like a relaxing coffee shop.

The taste is a little one dimensional, with coffee at the forefront and then some roasty dark malt flavors as well.

Mouth feel - medium, alc covered , roasted coffee aftertaste

Overall this beer is good but like the rest of Bell's dark beers it is so overshadowed by Expedition Stout.
