Dark black color, creamy tan head, leaves a lace in my glass, strong coffee aroma and flavor very, very bitter, kind of like chewing on coffee beans, after it warms gets much more flavoful, the most bitter coffee stout I have ever had, and I like it.

tulip glass. bottled on 9/14/11.

a - pours black and forms a finger or so of light brown head that calms to a film pretty quick. leaves some nice long legs of lacing in my glass.

s - espresso with big dark chocolate notes, faint earthiness.

t - big roasted malt flavor with even bigger espresso notes. some dark chocolate comes through though not nearly as much as in the nose. a few faint notes of dark fruits (cherry maybe?) and no discernible hop character. finish is bitter like black coffee and hangs on the tongue a bit.

m - full bodied for sure but has enough carbonation to keep it in check. medium co2 profile, slight alcohol warming.

o - a solid beer overall and one of my favorites from bell's. drinkability is good for such a rich brew. not quite as smooth or refined as some of the better known coffee stouts out there, but still worth seeking out.

Good morning! I figured today instead of my morning coffee I should go with my third Bell's stout.

A- Quite dark, almost black, with a decent tan head that actually sticks around for a while.

S- Fantastic marriage of coffee and roasted malt. Yes, coffee and stout are definitely meant to be together.

T- Begins with a sweet and tangy roasted malt hit. It's a bit sweeter than I expected, with the underlying malt giving the beer a wall of sweetness that backs the other flavors. The coffee flavor dominates the taste, far more so than other stouts which just use roasted malt to produce coffee-like flavors. The malt contributes other flavors, most notably bitter, unsweetened chocolate. The finish is fairly dry with a moderate bitterness, both from hops and roasted malt.

M- Smooth and almost a little syrupy. Medium-full body, a bit lacking in the carbonation department, but still nice.

D- Probably a one and done beer for me. I enjoyed the one I had, but it's a little too rich for me to want more. Plus, the alcohol is kind of high.

This was my first experience with a coffee stout, and it was certainly a pleasant one. I would definitely have this again, although I think the style could be done better. Now I'd like to try some of the really highly-rated coffee-infused stouts like Speedway and Breakfast (which, of course, I can't get here). I think this is a good starting point, though. Recommended.

12 oz. bottle hand-carried back from Chevy Chase Wine and Liquor DC, enjoyed in Barley Brown's shaker pint glass on Tax Day 2012.

One finger slow rising medium brown head, fairly slow dissipation with some lacing over opaque dark brown body, no visible rising carbonation. Big ass coffee hit in the nose, dark roast Sumatra with some Peaberry undertones, chocolate subsumed with a bit of citrus hops far in the background. Taste is coffee up front, big ass dose, faint cocoa nibs in background, some citrus but pushed far back into background. Mouthfeel a bit on the light side of medium, surprisingly light, good effervescence leading to bitter coffee-forward finish, Java the Hut. This isn't one of Pint Please favorite beers, but as far as coffee stouts go, this is pretty damn good.
