Strong coffee notes. Much more pronounced than other coffee stouts. First time I ever pulled tobacco notes from a beer. Very robust flavor. Nothing passive about it.

Tastes like bitter coffee, dark chocolate, smoke, earthy tobacco. Leaves your lips kinda sticky with all of the flavors. It's a very drinkable coffee stout. I would recommend this beer to anyone who likes stouts.

Good substantial dark brown pour with a tan head measuring in the full inch range, very good retention in there. Aroma was tons of coffee, hittin' those spots, mad reps.

This is kind of the prototypical coffee stout. Coffee is the predominant flavor, even though I suspect it has ample hopping and bitterness, its all about the coffee. It dominates lesser aspects of the beer like roasted and chocolate malt flavors.

Black in color with no penetration to light. There's an inch of tightly woven beige resting on top. Aroma is comprised of bitters dark roasted coffee and roasted barley. The taste is a well balanced blend of bitter dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and bitter roasted barley. The mouth is moderately oily and lightly chewy.

On tap at Maxs, Fells Point, Baltimore. Aroma is coffee. Smoked meats. Dark black, small off white head. Taste is smoke, salt, coffee, roasted barley. Tobacco. Feel is thin, medium low carbonation. Really interesting stout. Love the smoke. Good beer.
Not as good here from bottle to goblet, as i remember from Tap.
Strong coffee aroma and taste, mostly in the finish it dominates. Some toasty malt.

Look: Black; Little to no head.

Smell: Coffee! (refreshing that an advertised flavor component does in fact
present itself in the nose!)

Taste: Coffee is the overarching component here, but there's a subtle sweetness
that helps to offset the roastiness. (The cream and sugar if you will.)

Feel: Nondescript.

Overall: Actually not bad: Haven't had much luck with Bells in general and similarly have been
hit or miss on coffee stouts, but this sort of works.
The coffee nose / taste is intense, but there's just enough of a glimmer of sweetness in front that prevents a run away one note wonder.

12 oz. bottle, bottled on date 11/09/15. Finally getting around to reviewing this one from Bell's, acquired a single bottle from the local beer store.

Poured into a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale mini snifter.

A - Pours a rich oily chocolate black body, one finger of dark mocha head that goes down to a ring fast. Scattered strands of lacing. Appears sticky and well carbonated.

S - Initial whiff of fresh roasted cold coffee, followed by malt roastiness, slight hints of char & smoke, and some slightly perceivable hop character.

T - Taste is more chocolate / malt / roast forward than it is coffee, but the coffee bean roastiness is definitely in there. Bitter, dark, & roasty.

M - Feel is bitter & roasty. Crisply carbonated and easy-drinking. A very nice roasty stout.

Overall, a nice stout, but probably a bit over-priced. Glad to have tried it.

Lot of roast and coffee scents in this one. Taste is nicely balanced with the coffee and some sweet chocolate and malt, then finishes with a little bitterness. A touch roasty in there as well but doesn't cross into ashy. Its a very well made coffee stout. Can't believe its been around since 2001 and I'm first sampling this in 2016.

Opaque black appearance; nice thick mocha hued head, decent retention and nice lace on the rim. Being a big fan of black coffee, the smell of this stout is amazing. Huge scents of coffee roast on the nose, cacao nibs, char and wood. Taste is very earthy; the roast is very deep on this one, bringing up hints of soil, grass, woodiness; charred vanilla bean, malt, grain, cacao nib, nutmeg, clove, hop bite and burnt coffee grounds.

Bitter coffee, chocolate and char dominate the mouthfeel. Not a very complex brew, but as a straightforward coffee stout, this is just what I like and I find this one to be underrated. A bit pricey but would definitely enjoy again.

Pours black with a medium sized creme colored head. A bit of lacing is left behind after each sip, but quickly disappears. Charred, over roasted coffee hits the nose first, with a bit of malts in the aroma as well. The taste is very much coffee, with a slightly, sweet, malt background. Unfortunately, the coffee seems a little burnt. Still pleasant though. Mouth feel is pretty good. Maybe a tad watery, but still solid. Overall, a pretty darn good beer here. The burnt coffee aroma overwhelms me a bit, but it's still a good beer.

Served in a 12oz snifter.

12oz bottle, dated 10/24/15. Pours black with a large sized dense brown head. Smells of dark coffee and over-roasted malt. The taste follows very closely with dark coffee, earthy hops, burnt malt, and char. A good amount of bitterness in the late aftertaste. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, it's a straight-forward coffee stout with some pleasant roast/char flavors.

look is good and smell is a little spicy. initial taste extremely coffee forward. alot of bitter aftertaste due to the amount of coffee and dark roasted malts. i drink a hammerhead cup of coffee black and this beers seems little too bitter for me. but it does have a good crisp mouthfeel to it

Packaged on Oct 24, '15 and rated on 25th Jan '16. (Shout out to Bell's for plain and simple dating!) pour is a dark brown and no light passes throughthe glass. Head is a fine foam and persistent. Smell is dark rost coffee - natch - and roasted grain. Nice smooth and moderately dry taste and strong dark coffee with chocolate and subtle hop backdrop. Very well made and anice complement to the winter warmers and bocks.

This beer pours an opaque black color with a two finger mocha head that fades to a small ring around the edge of the glass with a microfilm layer across the top. There are many hanging sheets of lacing. Smell is bitter coffee and sweet chocolate. Taste is the same with bitterness up front but a very sweet finish. Feel is light side of medium, oily and slightly sticky. Overall a very nice beer, but when compared to other stouts at a similar price point it falls a bit short.

Pours a mostly black, maybe a hint of brown, small head and very thin tan ring like lace that barely retains. Big coffee, roasted malt and nutty aroma. Taste is initially sweet and creamy on the tongue as is the finish. However, the coffee and hops flavor soon take over and add a significant bittering. The finish and aftertaste leave become dry and coffee like. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and smooth.
This one is all about the coffee. If you like coffee then this is the beer for you. I like coffee, thus, I like it.

S-lots of roasted coffee, burnt chocolate, unsweetened cocoa, charcoal
T-more roasted coffee and unsweetened cocoa up front, followed by a more sweet milk chocolate in the finish
M-medium bodied and smooth
O-very good coffee stout. Wouldn't hesitate to have it again

Pours dark black with a finger of an off-white, caramel head. Decent lacing.

Aroma is an absolute coffee bomb! It's the totally dominating aroma; nothing else is able to come through. It's almost a blend of a more roasty espresso and a fruit-forward cold-brewed coffee. I also get a bit of oats.

Taste is much more tame than the aroma. A bit of citrusy hops comes forth first. A lighter, more crisp mouthfeel overall. On the lighter, more carbonated side of the stout spectrum. I prefer a more thick body. The coffee mainly comes through in the last 1/3 of the sip. Nice and roasty with negligible amounts of bitterness. The oat flavor is also present in the taste.

This beer reminds me of a less balanced, more coffee-forward, and bit thinner Founders breakfast stout. With so many great stouts, this stout is rather average in the mix. I see this pairing well with a charcoal grilled New York strip steak with a red wine sauce. It gets a 81.5/100.

12oz bottle, Batch 15018 PKGD 11/03/15
A - dark brown body with a creamy tan head that holds unbelievable retention
S - big coffee aroma with chocolate and roasted barley
T - big coffee flavors to go along with that big coffee aroma; dark chocolate, caramel, roasted barley, black tea, earthy hops in there as well
M - creamy and smooth, fuller body, ample carbonation, roast lingers on the bittersweet finish
O - better than I remember! A very solid stout with coffee. Glad to come back to it for an official review. I'll be buying this again.

Bottled 11/3/15: Pours so dark brown that it looks pitch black with a huge 3 finger foamy/creamy tan head that was full of tiny bubbles, dissipating extremely slowly; I had time to run my finger through it and it still stuck around for several minutes in it's whipped and frothy espresso-like form, leaving outstanding lacing coating the sides. It looked like moon craters after a while and was a great looking head overall.

Smells of burnt coffee grinds, black coffee, fresh coffee beans and grains up front, followed by burnt grains, cocoa powder, vanilla, roasted nuts, metallic yeast, toffee and espresso. Faint herbs or hops pop through, with earthy notes like and peat moss accents coming through.

Tastes like a burnt cup of coffee with a lot of char and smoked grains dominating. The bitter black coffee, fresh coffee beans, vanilla and chocolate notes follow the char/burnt flavors, but can't overtake the bitterness as the sweetness acts complimentary and not as the star. It seems like a burnt piece of wood from a campfire stirred the beer as the smoky flavors really take over the more it warms up. Some yeast and metallic notes trickle through as does piney hops and espresso or chocolate whipped cream, but this is so roasty that it tastes ashy - too burnt as I love coffee and would have enjoyed more coffee and less charcoal.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery, but it maintains a medium weight and slick feel as it slides down. As bitter as the boldest Starbucks, this is sharp and full of coffee notes that get lost in the roasted malts and burnt-ness. I enjoyed it and will seek it out again as coffee flavored stouts are some of my favorite beers.

A 4.5 - nice dark brown/black beer with a nice mocha head that leaves great lacing
S 4.25 - hard toasty coffee smell, green/red peppers, mostly roasted coffee which is exactly what I'd expect
T 4 - still toasty coffee. But also some oats and milk flavor in there. I wish it was as robust as the smell.
M 4 - medium mouthfeel, alc covered, aftertaste is coffee
O 4 - it's better than the double cream stout, I would and will buy this one again. I like the strong coffee smell.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass. Pours pitch black with a small light brown head. Smells of coffee and slight fruit. Tastes of coffee, but with slight chocolate. Beer is light bodied, good carbonation, nice finish. Overall, a very good beer.

It's a good-looking stout. It's opaque black, and it keeps a ring of foam around the edge with some tiny bubbles in the middle.
The smell is surprisingly spicy. It's definitely coffee, but it also smells like freshly cut green and red peppers. Not really what I was expecting from a coffee stout, but it's interesting.
The taste is largely coffee and roasted malt. There's a bit of spicy bite, but it comes across more like hops than peppers.
It's a little light on the tongue, but the crisp carbonation goes well with the peppery smell and the bite in the flavor.
Overall: a solid coffee stout with an interesting, if unusual, scent.

This is an excellent coffee stout, but the downfall of the beer is the price point. Originally saw it priced at $15.99 for a six pack. Otherwise, a very creamy, full bodied brew with an excellent coffee flavor.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pours a chocolate color, somewhat opaque. Not much head, some lacing. Smell is a vibrant dark roast coffee, roasted malts, some chocolate, some vanilla, a little coconut when fully warmed. Taste also leads with dark roast coffee, roasted malts, a light vanilla. Chocolate mostly fades. A nice coffee bitterness throughout. Smooth, a little creamy, slightly thin for all the hearty aroma and taste, but that's fairly minor.

Great coffee flavor, very appealing and easy to drink. An above average coffee porter, with a good price point for what you get. Well worth a purchase.
