Pours with a huge frothy head that takes its time settling down. Thick foam clings to the sides of the glass on its way down.

Big aroma of black coffee and darkly roasted barley.

Bold, bitter coffee flavor with a roasty edge. Dark chocolate, riesen candy, burnt toast notes. Slight caramel finish mixes with light alcohol notes in the breath.

Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Medium-low carbonation. Seems a bit more like beer coffee than coffee beer, but I liked it just the same.

Thanks to Sarah for bringing this back from Indiana!

Looks like a stout, decent head and lace. Dark coffee & espresso explosion in the nose, supplemented by baker's chocolate and plenty of deeply roasted malts. Hint of forest-y funk at the end that's reminiscent of Nøgne Ø's Dark Horizon.

Massive coffee bomb on the tongue as it rushes to the back of my throat. Espresso galore, lingering bitter coffee as it descends. Surprisingly thin body detracts from the experience. Absolutely imbalanced, but I happen to like it.

A - Deep, dark, pitch black. No light comes through. A medium-to-dark brown head forms and fades quickly.

S - Coffee, duh. Amaretto, dark chocolate, espresso.

T - Wow...now that was a jolt. Strong coffee smacks you in the mouth. There's a strong bite at the end. It seems to be a combination of alcohol and absurd amounts of coffee. There's also plenty of roasted malt and really dark chocolate. I can taste something great trying to come through but it just finishes funky. I thought it would get better as it warms but it didn't. Sort of like lake water and old coffee.

M - Palate becomes saturated with roasted malt and coffee beans. Like you just chewed on coffee beans. Thinner-than-expected body and a strange aftertaste. Like way too strong of an espresso that has been sitting out for too long. I poured out the last few sips from my glass.

Pretty sure this wasn't an old bottle so I think Bell's just overdid it on this one. May have gotten a little cocky, ha.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark tan/black, creamy 1 inch head, plenty of lacing at first, then dies down rather quickly.

Smell - Strong malty coffee java aroma. Cocoa, nuts, dark fruits, a little caramel and smoke in there also.

Taste - Dark, robust and very bitter coffee bomb. All other flavors are buried under this. The real issue is, the coffee doesnt seem to be very good quality. Malts add a burnt, smoked flavor. Hops, sugars, everything is masked.

Mouthfeel - Bitter coffee coats everything. Tounge and palette is coated with java. Aftertaste is bitter smokey.

Overall - Not a fan, the coffee flavor is overboard, and not very flavorful. No balance, just java bomb, and not very good java at that.

One finger head in a pint glass, this is a near black brew with some retention and little lacing. Smell is coffee and burnt malt and the taste follows the nose. Medium body with little carbonation it is dry and bitter with some vanilla and chocolate notes. A very nice brew.

Enjoyed in a 5oz glass as part of a 6 beer flight at Bell's Brewery...

Appearance - Beer is a dark opaque brown, tan head with some nice lacing left behind.

Smell - Fresh rich ground coffee with notes of burnt toffee.

Taste - Dark black roasty coffee, with toasted dry breadcrust and dark chocolate. Finishes dry with lots of lingering black coffee.

Mouthfeel - Medium mouthfeel with medium carbthat leaves a dry clean palate. Very smooth and drinkable.

Overall - Really a nice and balanced java stout, lots of roasted coffee and perfect dryness to keep you sipping.

Appearance: Close to, if not totally, black. Head is a darker tan that quickly dissipates to a tiny ring. Almost no lacing to be had. Pours on the thick and heavy side. Very still.

Smell: Coffee and loads of it. Fresh ground, whole bean, and fresh brewed coffee all make an appearance. Tons of chocolate too. Cocoa takes the forefront with the coffee. Some sweeter notes round out the back. Any hopping is covered over and undetectable. Burnt malts and a touch of char and smoke.

Taste: Sweeter than the nose would have indicated. Big boozy fruity component. Coffee beans and day old coffee. Cocoa and roasted malts. Loads of burnt character. The aftertaste runs to chocolate covered coffee beans. Pure coffee onslaught complete with coffee breath.

Mouthfeel: Somehow full and watery at the same time. Carbonation is almost non-existent. Borders on syrupy at times. Dry on the finish. Smooth as all get out.

Overall: Almost too aggressive on the coffee. I can only imagine what fresh must do. I'm pretty sure it's coffee with a time lapse malt/alcohol tab that dissolves over a 2 week bottle condition. Nice, but definitely a bit overbalanced on the coffee.
