Reviewing the Java Stout from Bell's Brewery.
2011 bottle served in snifter
Appearance: Darkest of browns, no light can cut through this beer. Small tan head on pour, that dissipates a minutes later. 4/5
Smell: Black coffee, espresso and milk chocolate. 4/5
Taste: Tastes like roasted black coffee with hints of creamy milk chocolate. Delicious coffee breath finish. 4/5
Mouthfeel: Creamy medium body with very low carbonation. Finishes bitter. 4/5
Overall: This is a delicious coffee-forward stout that is incredibly drinkable. I do not particularly like coffee, but enjoyed this brew.
Recommendation: Fans of coffee flavors will love this one, whether they are a casual beer drinker or a beer geek.
Pairings: Almond biscotti or oatmeal cookies.
Cost: $15.99 for a six pack.

Appearance is rich black with hints of brown. Very thick, tan head. Nice lacing.
Smells like roasted espresso beans, with a bit of sweet malt.
Taste is nutty, roasted coffee. A bit of sweet malt and smoke. Pleasant bitterness; hard to tell if it is the coffee or hops. Taste is pretty straightforward.
Mouthfeel is smooth and a bit creamy. Medium carbonation and a bit of acidity. As the beer warms, it becomes exceptionally drinkable; pillowy and clean.
Overall, it is a very good, straightforward, coffee stout.

A - Pours nearly black - dark espresso coloring - with thin layer of khaki head. Slowly dissipates to thin layer of bubbles
S - Powerful smell of coffee beans & espresso. Hints of roasted malt, nuttiness, and chocolate are hiding behind the strong coffee smell.
T - Tastes like an espresso with a hint of chocolate malt flavors. The coffee is by far the main flavor, just as advertised, with just enough malty and bitter flavors for some balance
M - Slick and oily residue. Heavier body with prickly carbonation
O - This is a nice combination of coffee and stout but a bit intense to drink on a regular basis. The coffee flavor really comes out well and it balances nicely with the malt. Would only recommend if you like coffee!

Bottle poured into a snifter
Pours a very dark black with a slightly brown/off white head
Smell is completely dominated by the coffee, little else comes through
Taste is very coffee centric with the coffee heavy in the finish and aftertaste as well
If coffee is your thing this is a good stout. I prefer something like Founder's Breakfast as a more balanced coffee flavor
