Pours a beautiful deep chestnut brown, almost opaque black but just showing enough around the edges to show the reddish tinge. A solid off-white creamy 2-finger head rumbles, almost as if from a nitro tap, to a resting half finger cap that clings to the edges like whipped froth. Really nice. Beer is clear unless yeast is unsettled from the bottom, but otherwise nice and crisp looking.
Aroma is mild and deep in the glass, but still present and complex. Mixed incense, roasted plums, and sweet burnt sugar aromas all capped with a smokey oak quality and subtle alcohol.
The taste is, unfortunately, this beers downfall. It's not terrible by any means, but the rest of the beer is so solid that i wish the taste could match up with the rest. Immediately after pouring I get a strong metallic meat flavor followed by intense cloying sweet alcohol. Once the beer begins to warm the flavors switch to earthier flavors with some browned sugar and dried fruit. No hops, which is cool and expected. Again, this is almost Scotch ale-like with a medium bodied feel and strong flavor but dominant smoke character. I'm not sure exactly where that's coming from or why, but definitely there. The flavor is interesting but not quite to style. There is some Belgian yeast qualities at the start and finish which makes the whole experience a little confused.
Mouthfeel is soft and smooth, nice carbonation that moves the beer all around. Medium bodied with a bit more sugar-feel than I would like. Could probably use some time.
Despite the moderate alcohol strength (7.5%) this has a strong alcohol flavor and feel which makes this beer a litle hard to enjoy from start to finish. Maybe could use some time in the cellar.
