Pours very dark with a nice sized head.
Smell is definitely like other Belgian Ales that I've tried. It's hard for me to point exactly what quality that it reminds me of, it's almost anise-like in that it could come off as a liquorish type of scent, but a bit less bitter. Because this is a dark belgian ale, the flavor combined itself with that of the darker malts, which in my opinion makes for a much more satisfying mouthfeel.
Color is very dark and opaque, almost exactly the same consistency of a stout or porter.
First sip is quite nice. I think what's coming out most in this beer is the fact that it's a darker Belgian ale, which almost turns it into a doppelbock/belgian hybrid. Taste is curious, yet not very hoppy. Mouthfeel is clean, with a nice aftertaste. Overall, a very nice beer.
I had heard of this beer for quite some time and was quite surprised when it showed up at my local party store. All in all, another fine example of what should be common script for Bell's. Cheers!
