Growler @ Bells
1-11-14

A- Near black with a nice light tan head that stuck around for 10min or so, and still left nice lacing all over the glass. No noticeable bubbles.

S- Barley, dirty earth, over ripe fruit funk. Some light chocolate, vanillas

T- Kinda meh as it was cooler with nothing distinguishing it. Got better as it warmed with roasted barley, hints of chocolate, still had the earthy flavor hanging around. Noticable dry finish with no real bitterness.

M- Medium body but slightly watery feeling, still no noticeable carbonation. No noticeable stickiness.

O- Started off as disappointed as it was cool, but it did get better as it warmed up, still nothing to write home about, but drinkable. Fairly average across the board, guess I was expecting more from one of my favorite Brewerys.

Draft at Bells.

Pours dark chocolate brown with minimal head. Aroma of chocolate. Taste is hints of chocolate, roast malt. All flavors somewhat muted. Could be indicate of a dry stout - a style on which I am not well versed. I'd think it's close to an Irish stout (some definite Guiness comparisons here).

Served on tap at Bell's Brewery (Eccentric Cafe).

A: Glasses are waterflushed before pour so I cannot factor in the head appearance. Pours a dark brown with a minimal head and absent lacing.

S: Great aromas. Toasted malt, liquorice, pine, hops, earthy, dry.

T: Don't know if this changed, but this was def. an Irish stout. The taste was typical of an dry stout with simple flavors coming full circle. The malt and earthy elements tasted great. There however was one flavor I could not pinpoint, but regardless still enjoyed.

M: Good coating and medium/light body with a nice dry aftertaste.

I'm not really impressed with this one. Looks pretty, and it's nice and crisp like a good Irish-style stout should be, but there's something on the nose I don't dig... Almost a touch plastic-y. It rounds out as it warms, I guess... Still an A-OK beer, but it's not my favorite.

Served on tap at the Eccentric Cafe.

A: medium brown, very light for a stout, flat appearance, no head

S: big roasted barley character along with kiln coffee

T: notes of smoke and roast. This one does a great job at featuring specialty grains. Great balance.

MF: light body, high carbonation

D: nicely balanced stout, a bit on the light side for the style- great amount of flavor

On-tap at the Cafe...The color is way too light for a stout, a dark clear copper with lots of amber, ugly and off for the style. A light tan head with bad retention and lacing...The aroma is light but good, lightly roasted coffee, a touch of smoke, black coffee finish. Not really balanced but good...The taste is a big improvement, light coffee, very creamy and smooth. Roast and nuts begin to dominate after a while. Super easy to drink.

A great brown ale, a terrible dry Irish stout which is what they told me this was.

On tap at Meridian Pint during their Bell's Night of Darkness event. Served in a snifter.

The pour brings a hazy, medium-brown brew with a thin light tan head and a thin collar after that falls. The nose is pretty good with some fairly-strong chocolate dominating and being followed by a bit of earth, light roast, and a touch of vanilla.

The flavor pulls back quite a bit and there is some chocolate behind a flavor that is mostly a bit woody and earthy. Interesting, but not all that grand. Feel is a bit thin for what this is, though not by a large amount. Pretty drinkable in the end, but not my favorite. Out of the four new ones I had, Milk Stout is crowned king.

Another stout on tap at Meridian Pint. Beer is brown and hazy with a thin tan head of small bubbles, leaves a little lacing on the glass, carbonation low.

Aroma is good, chocolate, woods, mildly vanilla. A little coffee.

Beer is thinner than expected, way way thinner. Roasted malts and minimal sweetness are the things I notice first, it's interesting. The finish is a little dry, the flavors are all there but it's still somehow bland. I'd have ti again but wasn't overly impressed with it. The chocolate was the most interesting thing.

Brought this one back for Bell's All Stout's Day. Reviewed from notes.

A- Pours a deep dark brown color. When held up to the light you can see ruby highlights around the edge of the beer. 1 finger dirty tan head that leaves a little lacing on the sides of the glass but not much to really write home about.

S- Nice upfront smell of roasted malts. Almost more of a coffee smell than anything. Some chocolate notes in there as well. When this warms a little I could pick out some light vanilla.

T- This is a full force roasted malts in your face kind of stout I think. There is some underlying sweetness in the full drink but you can really tell of it in the towards the middle and ending of it. Nothing really else going on in the flavor department.

M- Medium-heavy mouthfeel. Carbonation is lacking a little with this beer I think but it doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the stout. Nice coffee flavors stand out on the tongue long after the beer is gone. Nice clean feel to this beer. A little watery but overall good.

D- This is a very sessionable stout in my opinion. Nothing really too over the top which makes it a nice beer. Nice way to end the day which is what I did with this one.

I'm glad Bell's brewed this one again and would hope that maybe it might become a mainstay. Of course we all can't get what we want huh?

12oz bottle acquired in trade with robertsreality (thanks!).

Poured a dark and cloudy brown color with a large sized tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, wood, and coffee. Tastes of roast, chocolate, and some coffee. Flavors on the weaker side compared to the aromas. A very, very light sourness to it. Thinner body.
