Appearance: Black with dark brown head.

Aroma: Coffee, dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, and a slightly sweet smell like condensed milk. (Double Cream Stout is dairy free)

Taste & Mouthfeel: Straightforward stout here; roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate with a smooth mouthfeel, a bit of tingly carbonation, and a rich, dark chocolate bitterness on the finish. Texture is nice and smooth, but the carbonation seemed a bit high for the beer, as it distracted from the smooth texture and didn’t fit the dark flavors.

Final Word: A solid, drinkable, no frills stout. All of the flavors are very pleasant and balanced, but nothing here really surprises or innovates. This is the kind of stout you can rely on when you need something comfortable and drinkable, but will disappoint if you are looking for something to take you out of the ordinary. This is a double edged sword, as there is definitely something to be said for really nailing a rich stout, but it lacks that special something that could make it a favorite or make it stand out in your memory. Grab it when you want something very drinkable and smooth, or when you want to make a meal pairing, as its straightforward profile makes it perfect for that purpose! (1,230 characters)

12oz bottle from batch 10080, which I believe makes it from the winter of '10/'11. Since this beer was pretty clearly not intended to be consumed at such an age, I've given it scores that won't affect its current average at all. Consider the following notes illustrative more than evaluative.

A: Black body with a half inch off-white head, even with a vigorous pour. Minimal lace. Still carbonated, but definitely not as lively as one would hope.

S: A bit of dark fruit oxidation actually goes quite nicely with the creamy milk chocolate and roasted malt notes. Still quite enjoyable.

T: Solid here as well, with chocolate dominating throughout. Smooth, creamy, and a bit sweet.

M: A little thin, with only light carbonation. Not great.

O: This was surprisingly good with some age on it, but is definitely better fresh.

an absolutely delicious stout, but i don't get the cream part, there s no sweet finish or body like the milk sugar usually imparts on these beers, but other than that curious absence for its name, its a wonderful beer. rich and dark, huge grain bill i have to imagine, with special dark, carafa, and burnt barley, among chocolate and caramel too. it all combines into a very coffee like aroma, with some good roast to it, no acidity, and an intense dark chocolate element, bakers chocolate, unsweetened even. super dark to look at too, no light coming in, and not much head on it, but some khaki froth when i aggravate it. the flavor is not overly complex, just the dark grains meshing together all the way through. the thing that makes this beer special i think, is its texture, its rich and creamy without being filling, sweet, or too strong to drink a bunch of. not as bitter in the finish as its color should mandate that it is, velvety, and i could make a morning of these for sure, great pre-noon beer if you ask me. thanks to clay station for sharing a bottle this morning. (1,080 characters)

Looks dark and beautiful, smells delicious, mouthfeel is so creamy, and it tastes as delicious as it smells. I know its seasonal but I stash a few to enjoy all summer long. The roasted malt characteristics stand out, with some fleeting hints of smoke and dark fruit. Just enough sweetness to balance out the earthiness and hop bitterness. Such a great beer I can't get enough of it. (382 characters)

A: Pours a solid black with a cream colored head. Looks like a stout is supposed to look.
S: Smells of roasty malt, coffee
T: Plenty of Roasty malt, dark chocolate, coffee.
M: Carbonation is spot on. A little bit of thickness/chewiness, but not too much. Leaves a lingering roasty coffee flavor
O: This is what a stout is supposed to be. Good roast, chocolate, coffee flavor.
This is a great beer to help your taste buds reset after a couple of hop bombs. Also a perfect choice if you want to move a Guiness drinker to better beers. Overall an excellent example of the style and a very good stout. (613 characters)

A: Black body with a mocha head, medium lacing and tons of retention.

S: Strong oatmeal scents. Chocolate smells.

T: Chocolate and coffee.

M: Slightly bitter creamy mouthfeel.

From a twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass.

A- Pitch black (as was the trend for my beers this past Saturday), dark khaki-colored head a finger thick, abundant lacing

S- Heavy grain smell, oatmeal and granola and other sweet malts.

T- Molasses is heavy at the finish, and there's lots of vanilla, caramel and dark roasted malt gives it a burnt flavor. There are some hints of dark chocolate.

M- Creamy, somewhat light-bodied, with lots of different sensations on the tongue. There's the dryness, sweetness, and a mealy sort of feel.

O- I didn't know what to make of this stout initially because there are so many flavors and sensations going on. But I'd say it's good. Maybe a bit scatterbrained as far as its approach and perhaps unfocused, but still good. (765 characters)

I've had cream stout before, so what's the deal with double cream stout? Is it a double stout with cream? At 6.1% ABV, I assume it has double the cream. It's that time again to open a 12 ounce bottle and pour into a glass. On to the beer:

A smooth pour yield an obsidian colored beer topped with a half-inch of tanned head. The head stays up well and leaves a few streaks of lacing around the glass. It smells like a pleasant sweet stout. Lactose being an obvious note, pleasant roasted malt in the back, so an appealing nose.

Being labeled as "double" anything connotes a heavy beer. Not so in Double Cream Stout. Not only flavorful, but very damn smooth going down. It's cream sweet, backed by a good stout with roasted and licorice notes. As for texture, I imagine that it's not far from silk, because it's incredibly smooth.

Dessert has been served in the form of Bell's Special Double Cream Stout. This is one that I'd love to try again. (947 characters)

A - Pours pitch black with a two-finger tan foamy head. Heavy lacing.

S - Roasted malts, sweet milk chocolate, and dark coffee.

T - Follows the smell. Roasted malts with sweet milk chocolate. Bitter coffee in the middle. Finish is smokey.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth drinking with a watery mouthfeel.

O - Very easy drinking roasted stout. A little more body would help out. Still very good. (416 characters)

Had this last night at the bar, I have not had anything from Bell's that I have disliked so far. This one I truly appreciated, since it is a cream stout that does not contain dairy. Nice smooth mouth feel, delicious chocolate flavor. This stout is pleasing, without being thick and is very easy to drink. I recommend it highly. (327 characters)

Deep black color with red highlights and a dark caramel thin head.
Predominant aroma of coffee with milk, some caramel and dark fruits.
Malt roasted flavor with notes of milk, coffee, cocoa, earthy and citrus hops and licorice. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Quite creamy body with low carbonation.
A mellow Stout with a velvet sensation. Good, not exceptional. (357 characters)

Kind of shocked I haven't reviewed this yet, but oh well. Recent tasting on tap at Capone's.

Typical dark brown-black pour you'd expect from a stout, a small creamy tan head sank to a ringlet, holding there and dotting the glass with lace. Dark roasty malts in the nose, milk chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. Smooth sugary sweetness in the taste, cocoa, light roasty bitterness for balance, and a slight mineral element in there as well. Medium body, slick mouthfeel, but perhaps not quite as luscious as the name would imply. I'd bet this would be great on nitro, but I say that about many stouts. Nice beer overall, but I'd reach for an Expedition much quicker than this. (679 characters)

A- Pitch black, somewhat oily pour into a snifter from the 12oz bottle. One-finger light mocha head forms and has nice retention. Cap falls down to a frothy ring and has some creaminess to it. Lacing starts thick at the top with some pillows and finishes spotty.

S- Malt forward with an emphasis on roast and toasty characteristics. Notes of coffee, light caramel, slight dark fruits, cereal grains and burnt malts come to mind. Some nice milk chocolate rounds it all out.

T- Follows the nose quite well with the same sort of malt profile and yeast balance. Deeply roasted malts are responsible for most of the flavors with notes of dark roast grains, burnt malts, espresso, cocoa powder and toast. Other hints are of caramel, slight sweets and the yeast provides some dark fruits.

MF- Moderately thick bodied with a a slightly creamy and silky texture. Carbonation at a low to medium level and smooth.

Deeply roasty but lacks maybe a bit of texture in the mouthfeel for me. Solid stout nonetheless and something I would certainly have again. (1,046 characters)

I have had this multiple times at two different locations- on tap. It was labelled at both places as Bells Cream Stout. I looked at Bells website and did not find a Cream Stout, except Bells Double Cream Stout, so I am assuming they are the same.
I found the flavor was not that exceptional, good but not great, at one place. I believe it was due to it being served ice cold, and this needs to be drunk at a more moderate temperature.
I have had it multiple times since, and found it exceptionally flavorful, with all sorts of malt flavors, a touch of hoppiness, and definite coffee and chocolate flavors. The flavors are well balanced, so that if you are thinking "coffee" that seems predominant. If you are thinking "malts galore" you will really notice all the malt flavors.
I wonder if some of the other reviewers had a serving that was too cold, because this is one of the most flavorful dark beers I have had. Or it was a different beer. It did seem to have more of a kick than the Double Cream stout's advertised 6.1% alcohols. (1,034 characters)

Bottle dated 8-29-13. Poured into a stout glass.

Near black brew with clear, dark golden brown along the edge. Developed a 2 finger, dense, foamy, medium tan head that slowly dissipates leaving a fair amount of clingy lace on the glass.

Smells of dark fruits, malts and yeast with a little coffee. Malts come on a little strong.

Taste is not as complex as I expected, but good. Coffee, some roast flavors, some malts. Nice smooth bitterness with no bite from the grains. Just a hint of sweet. Pleasant aftertaste. Perhaps a bit tame, but a good flavor.

The bottle says; "dark, sweet and smooth tones intermingled with a soft, roasty finish." I think that describes the taste quite well.

The cream shows up in the mouth. Velvety smooth and full bodied. It has that oatmeal stout feel to it. Very easy to drink.

It's not overly aggressive. Not very bold. But it tastes good and is very drinkable. (901 characters)

A - Jet black, carbonated tan head, looks like Coca-Cola, head never really dissipated

S - Chocolate and Coffee! (My four-year-old daughter thought it smelled like cookies!)

T - Delicious! Chocolate stout, malty, very creamy, just the right amount of carbonation and bitterness

M - Thick and creamy yet crisp and clean (if that makes any sense); doesn't leave that thick aftertaste other stouts seem to

O - One of my favorite Bell's beers! Very sessionable, in my opinion. I could see some nervous stout wannabe's give this a go and enjoy it. Worth the high price point if you ask me... (590 characters)

Very nice rich, yet sweet Stout... Smooth enough to session on. Also full enough to enjoy only one or two. Very creamy and balanced. Worth seeking out but won't blow you away~ (290 characters)

A- Dark as all hell. Small creamy head. Lacing remains after head quickly dissipates.

S- chocolate covered hop.

T- Dark roasted malts and chocolate first. Moderate bitter middle mixes nicely with the sweet and produces a rich complex and creamy flavor. Even more in the end with some creamy coffee and light smoke. Always creamy.

M- Double cream is no joke. Starts and ends smooth without being heavy. It's a double double.

O- This is one rich and creamy stout. It has great balance with the sweetness of the chocolate roasted malt and bitter hop back. Fits like peanut butter and jelly. Good job Bells. (609 characters)

Appearance - Half inch, light brown head. Dark brown, close to black.

Aroma - Great smells come off of this one; roasted coffee, milk chocolate, toasted bread, caramel, and brown sugar.

Taste - Milk chocolate and roasted coffee up front, followed by burnt toast in th end.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied, smooth on the way down. Bitter on the finish. Modest carbonation.

Bottle poured into glass.

Appearance. Black with light cream head. Head disappeared quickly.

Smell. Smells like most stouts with nothing significant to seep rate it from the others.

Taste. This beer is good. Slightly bitter, strong stout taste without being offensive. Not really getting the cream taste or feel though. A bit more chalky than I expected. I drank one with a soupie. For those that don't know what a soupie is, it is a cured greasy meat I believe also know as sopresatta. Not sure if that is spelled right. They really complemented each other well so it would be worth trying with other cured meats or pepperoni.

Overall a little disappointed due to it being hyped to highly by someone I know with similar beer taste as me. Good but not great. (762 characters)

Pours black with brown edges and a small brown cap of foam. Both aroma and flavor lack the roastiness of some other cream stouts I've had that don't claim to be "double".
Mouthfeel is also quite thin for what the label claims; lacks both creaminess and stoutness. Has more of a porter-like twang.
Still quite enjoyable. Nothing bad about this beer, just a bit thin and light for a double cream stout. (401 characters)

I received this in a bottle from a Mix a Six pack at my local retailer.

It appeared with a dark brown color with a 1/4 inch head on top. It smelled very nice with hints of half & half cream (hence the name), malt, roasted barley, and coffee.

The taste was what one would expect from a decent midline priced stout from a microbrewery. Not underwhelming, not overwhelming.

Mouthfeel was creamy, cool and not real gritty. I was expecting a little bit more of a creamy texture but just received a typical stout taste.

Overall for price point, this one is a bit high. I've had better and far worse. This one is middle of the road for me. I wouldn't buy a whole pack but if offered to me, I wouldn't turn it down. (713 characters)

Jet black in color and I don't see any light getting through this brew. I see a wisp of light brown foam on the top of this beer. I smell rich dark malt,roasted barley, and black licorice. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and is a nice contrast to the bitterness from the roasted barley that fades into a light sweetness at the back of the palate. (344 characters)

12 fl. ounce bottle. Packed on October 16th, 2013. Poured into a nonic pint glass.

Appearance: A rich dark brown body, nearly black, sits below a fluffy sand colored head. The body has an amber glow on the sides when it is exposed to light. The head collapses and leaves a great layer of froth throughout. Sticky lacing lingers around for much of the brew. Nearly a picture perfect example of the way this style should be presented.

Smell: Notes of chocolate and toasted malts really stand out. Very faint floral notes break through.

Taste: Toasted malts. Creamy and smooth chocolate. The hops kick in and give this a semi-dry finish. Very smooth medium, coming up a bit shy of a full body. The carbonation is just a pinch too much for my liking.

Overall: I am not disappointed by this brew. Great take on the style. I would like a little more from this one though. If this had the fullness of their Kalamazoo Stout then we would be in serious business here. (966 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass

Look: Poured directly down the middle of the glass produced a 2 finger, tan head. It shrank within a couple of minutes to a nice film covering the top. Lacing is pretty good. The brew itself is very dark. Little light passes through.

Smell: Cocoa notes are most prominent. There is also a bit of a walnut to it as well. The nose falls off quite a bit as the beer sits, never something I'm a fan of, but the upfront notes are pleasant enough for me to not dock it too much.

Taste: Cocoa and a bit of a roasted nuts flavor. There is a bunch of malty-goodness that will have me digging around the internet to find out what they used, but other than that, it's pretty simple, in a good way.

Feel: Medium bodied. I was expecting it to be a bit heavier because of the name "double cream", but alas, it's just medium to me. The alcohol is completely hidden, and it only offers a slight bit of warmth. Not something I usually look for in a stout, but it's not necessarily bad either.

Overall: A very good stout. I'm more of an "in your face" type guy when it comes to stouts, but this is a very pleasant, mild stout that I could have a good day grilling in the cool weather with. My first foray into Bell's isn't a bad one. I'll be checking out their other brews soon. (1,306 characters)
