Review taken last weekend of November, though this isn't my first rodeo with this excellent American stout.

12 oz brown Bells style bottle. Label art is authentic Bells with its shade of white with red trim, a painted cherry tree and a few cherries placed along the sides. Lovely bottle and fits perfect for the cherry stout indeed. Poured this into a standard American Bell's pint glass.

A - pitch black with a splash of reddish color painted the edges when held toward the light. Actually a bit of red to it when just sitting there if you look at it right. Dark tan head didn't supply a lot of size on the pour but it does leave a lovely ring of creamy lace leaving better than average stick.

S - dark chocolate and tart cherries are the main act. Some roasted dark malts play in the background with hints of black coffee roast and a sweet malt toward the back of the nose. Almost creamy like as you pull away from this. Wonderful!

T - tart cherry up front with an almost sour like ale character to them, but not quite as sour as you'd expect from the first few notes. The stout side of this really takes over before the cherry gets too sour. Dark chocolate, hints of black coffee roast and dark toasted malts really sum up traditional American stout flavors. The finish brings the cherry and tartness back into play with an almost juicy gushing array of Michigan cherries with a faint semi bitter dark chocolate note as it settles into toasted malt notes as it drags out.

M - medium bodied. Though not as thick nor textured as other Bell's ales I've had it still displays a nice mouthfeel for a fruit stout. Having this too thick would take away from its tart cherry like character. The body is medium but its very smooth and easy to drink. Tartness and stout notes play well together and paired with a nice malt balance slash notes of dark chocolate its easy to handle more than 1 in a setting.

O - Bell's cherry stout holds a well deserved place amongst an array of their stout releases. The breweries from Michigan I love call the cold months 'stout season' and its hard to argue Bell's don't release a load of great, drinkable stouts for winter. I enjoy cherry stout and its almost a tradition for my friends and family to have one every winter. It's like an American stout meets sour ale with them walking hand in hand down your palate with the cherries only being there for flavor and not to just pucker you up. Cherry Stout holds a place in my heart and a place in Bell's winter lineup and I hope it remains there. One of the best fruit stouts ever made.

Notes from 7/16/14 at Hopleaf in Chicago, IL

Bottle into pint glass.

A: Opaque dark brown with a light brown head that disappears. Minimal lacing

S: Tart cherries, dark chocolate. Yeasty and musty.

T: Tart cherries. Roasted malts.

M: Thin a mildly carbonated. Too thin for what I was looking for in a stout.

D: Not very drinkable. Thin and tart. Does not hold up well to room temperature. This is cherry juice with a little stout, not the other way around, unfortunately.

Pours black with a large fading head.
Nose shows chocolate, roasted malt and chocolate fudge.
Flavours include more chocolate and roast but there's also an acidity from the cherry along with authentic cherry flavours. Could use more roast.
Carbonation feels a bit too lively.
