Bell's Cherry Stout. Batch 9447, Bottled November 18th, 2009. It's been cellared by me and the beer store for quite a while.
I poured this jet black stout into a snifter and got a noseful of dark roasted malts with rich coffee aromas, hot chocolate, a hint of baking cherry pie, and a vinous fruity, jammy thing going on. The beer is immediately sour as you take the beer in your mouth, it slightly unpleasant how sour it its, as the acidity really prevents you from really tasting much else until it subsides. As it does, you get a bit of cherry flavor and sweetness until the acid is gone and you start to taste the espresso and bitter chocolate. This is definitely a complex beer with a lot going on and a lot to taste for. As it warms up, the acidity is less present and it is more like a cherry cordial where the chocolate is more apparent. I think that tuning down the cherries to a more subtle level would really improve this beer and help balance it out.
The cherry flavor though is good and not that artificial, cough syrup cherry that I've had in other beers. I think that the mouthfeel suffers because for a beer that should be full bodied and smooth, the tart cherries make this beer prickly and drying. Alcohol heat is a little present just on the back of the throat, but not too bad. I don't think I would try this again unless the recipe was changed, but it was a nice experience.

Pours black with a large fading head.
Nose shows chocolate, roasted malt and chocolate fudge.
Flavours include more chocolate and roast but there's also an acidity from the cherry along with authentic cherry flavours. Could use more roast.
Carbonation feels a bit too lively.
